Special to The Times
J.C. Nimmer of Pierce County High School recently participated in the 2025 Washington Youth Tour sponsored by Satilla Rural Electric Membership Corporation (REMC) and The National Rural Electric Cooperative Association.
Nimmer was one of four area high school students selected to participate in the youth tour.
Others recognized include Alyssa Johnson of Wayne County and Ryan Sikes and Grayson Taylor, both of Douglas.
Nimmer, the son of Amy Nimmer and Chad Nimmer, attends Pierce County High School in Blackshear, where he is a rising senior. He is involved in many school-related activities, including Junior Beta, Student Council, Hospice Satilla Junior Board of Directors, HOSA, Math Team and Varsity Tennis. Nimmer loves being involved at his school and doing his best to be a leader.
Along with extracurricular activities, he participates in Champ Camp at his church, where he volunteers a week of his time to spend time with kids and help them learn more in their faith.
He also helped set up a distribution site for those in need during the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. Nimmer believes his best leadership ability is communication and looks forward to growing as a leader on Youth Tour. After high school, Nimmer hopes to get into med school and become a surgeon, help others and make a positive impact on the world.
Nimmer was able to explore government on a local and national level. The group gathered in Atlanta before departing for Washington D.C. He joined 116 students from Satilla’s sister electric co-ops across Georgia for the tour.
Satilla REMC interviewed 17 candidates before selecting the four students who attended the tour. Students are nominated by their school counselors and principals for outstanding leadership qualities and abilities.
Then-Senator Lyndon Baines Johnson inspired the Youth Tour when he addressed the NRECA Annual Meeting in Chicago in 1957. The Senator and future president declared, “If one thing goes out of this meeting, it will be sending youngsters to the national capital where they can actually see what the flag stands for and represents.”
Since 1965, the Washington Youth Tour has given over 2,500 students in Georgia and more than 50,000 students nationwide the opportunity to take part in this once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Satilla REMC and other cooperatives continue to realize Johnson’s dream by providing a means for young leaders to witness firsthand the sacrifices and efforts expended on their behalf.
