Dewey A. Harris, 98, went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, June 25, 2025.
Born in Patterson October 15, 1926, he was a son of the late William Harris and Mary Walker Harris. He has resided in Jacksonville since 1949. He enlisted in the U.S. Army February 16, 1945 at Fort McPherson and he attained the rank of technician fifth grade. He served in the 345th Ordnance Depot Company during World War II and was discharged November 30, 1946 at Fort Sam Houston, Texas.
He married the love of his life, Sarah Westberry and they moved to Jacksonville. He attended and served as an elder at Forest Christian Church and later became an active member at North Jacksonville Baptist Church. He had various jobs and he received his barber’s license, worked in the accounting field and then began his career at Safety Green Scaffolding, from which he retired in 1986 with 42 years of service. His hobbies were wood working and weekend farming.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Sarah Harris; one sister and four brothers.
Survivors include his daughters, Anne Hines (Rusty), Jacksonville, Alice Johnson, Beaufort, SC and Sandy Windhaus (Robert), Ball Ground; his grandchildren, Teresa (Casey), Jacob (Erika), Macie (Hamp) and Rebecca; his great-grandchildren, Cadelyn, Tristan, Lucy and Eleonore and several nieces, nephews and extended family.
Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Monday, June 30, at Peeples Family Funeral Home, 14165 N. Main Street, Jacksonville, FL.
Graveside funeral services for the family will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 1, at Laura Chapel Cemetery near Patterson with military honors by the U.S. Army.
