Turnout minimal in PSC voting

A total of 420 registered voters in Ware County cast ballots in advance and during Tuesday’s Closed Primary for representatives on the Public Service Commission in Districts 2 and 3.

The total represents 2.01 percent of the county’s 20,938 registered voters, according to data provided by the Ware County Board of Elections and Registration.

Of the 420 votes, 239 were cast Election Day Tuesday, June 17 with the rest during the primary’s early period weekdays Tuesday, May 27 through Friday, June 13 and by absentee. Elections Supervisor Carlos Nelson said the board certified the vote as official later Tuesday.

Republican incumbent Tim Nichols totaled 203 votes in District 2 to 51 for challenger Lee Muns. In District 3, incumbent Fitz Johnson ran unopposed and totaled 218 votes.

Democrat Alicia M. Johnson was un opposed in District 2 where she totaled 135 votes. Three people were vying for the seat in District 3, but surprisingly, there will be no need for a runoff next month.

Keisha Sean Waites collected 69 of the 115 votes cast in that district to finish with 60 percent, 10 percent and one vote more than needed to advance. Robert Jones had 24 votes and Peter Hubbard 22.

Waycross and Ware County voters next are at the polls for the General Election, Tuesday, November 4. On that ballot will be national, state and city races.

City Commission seats for Districts 1-3 are up this year while a special election is being held to fill the District 4 seat of the late Diane Hopkins. Qualifying for all those posts is Tuesday-Friday, August 19-22 in City Hall.

Shawn Roberts (D-1), Sheinita Bennett (D-2) and Katrena Felder (D-3), currently hold the seats.

Roberts joined city commission in December, 2024 after a special election for the seat formerly held by Norman E. Davis, who died in April, 2024. Bennett and Felder were elected in 2021.

Each of the three is holding office for the first time.

The city and county also hope to have a one-cent Flexible Option Sales Tax on the ballot for considerations as well. City commissioners have approved a resolution toward that end and are awaiting action by the county.

The board of elections must be informed 90 days ahead of the November 4 voting of the request to have the item on the ballot.
