DOVER BLUFF, Ga. Harold G. Voigt, Sr., 82, of Dover Bluff, Georgia, died Friday evening, June 13, 2025, at his residence after an extended illness.
He was born in Waycross to the late Fred W. Voigt, Sr., and Eva Tomberlin Voigt. Voight, Sr., graduated from Waycross High School in 1961. He was a member of the i960 Waycross High School football team coached by Earl O’Neal. This team was the first ever at Waycross High School to win a State Championship.
After high school, he married his high school sweetheart Ellen Sasser on April 7, 1962, and moved to Athens where he attended the University of Georgia, graduating in 1966.
His father developed Voigt Pecan Grove and Nursery, Inc., on Albany Avenue in Waycross, and at one time held the distinction of being the largest Pecan Grove east of Texas. Voight, Sr., joined his dad in 1968, and Pecan farmed until his retirement in 2006.
He worked closely with the University of Georgia for many years developing new plans and techniques for insect control in Pecan Orchards. After retiring, he and his wife, Ellen, moved to Dover Bluff. He was a former member of First Presbyterian Church in Waycross, where he served as an elder and was active in youth fellowship. He was currently a member of First United Methodist Church in Brunswick.
Along with his parents, Voight, Sr., was also preceded in death by his wife, Ellen Sasser Voigt; his grandson, Mark Austin Voigt, and his sister, Cecilia Voigt Bradshaw.
He is survived by his son, Harold G. Voigt, Jr., and his wife, Robyn, of Jacksonville, Fla.; his daughter, Kathy Gibson and her husband, Thomas, of Waycross; four grandchildren, Audrey Scott and her husband, Royce, Matthew Voigt, Jessica Voigt, and Jacob Gibson and his wife , Katelyn; two great grandchildren, Camryn Scott and Jackson Scott; two brothers, Fred W. Voigt, Jr., and his wife, Ann, of Dover Bluff, John Voigt and his wife, Judy, of Hartwell, Ga.; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
A memorial service was held at noon, Saturday, June 21 at the First United Methodist Church of Brunswick.
