Betty Joan Spires Buchan

HORTENSE — Betty Joan Spires Buchan, 85 of Hortense, passed away Thursday, June 19, 2025, at the home of her daughter in Townsend.

Mrs. Buchan was born August 29, 1939 in Valdosta to Romeo Rozell Spires and Mary Elizabeth Swain Spires. She had lived in Wayne County since 2009 and recently moved to Townsend after the death of her husband, Don Buchan.

Mrs. Buchan had worked in the Public School System as a paraprofessional until the birth of their youngest daughter, Shannon, at which time she became a full-time stay at home mom.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Buchan was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Donald Alfred Buchan; a sister and a brother-inlaw, Martha Jean and Jimmy Tucker; a granddaughter, Ashley Tiner; and her first husband of 15 years, Frazier Don Tiner.

Survivors include her children, Tricia Horne (Jimmy) of Brunswick, Pamela Bauchman of Jacksonville Beach, Fla., Angie Drew (Jim Hyde) of St. Simons Island, Donald A. Buchan, Jr., of Jacksonville, Charles Tiner (Vicky) and Mary “Missy” Buchan, all of Brunswick, and Shannon Durrence (Jimmie) of Townsend; grandchildren, Nick Roundtree (Courtney), Lauren Baker (John), Kennith Horne, Amber Thomas (Luther), James Drew (Susannah), Taylor Drew, Nicole Durrence, Dylan Turner, Jordan Durrence (Maddison), Tiffany Smith, Brooke Cooksey and Skylar Tiner (Hunter McDaniel); great grandchildren, Tristan Roundtree, Magnolia, Killian and Ruari Baker, Aubrey Jane Thomas, Braden and Kashlynn Drew, Kellum, Thomas and Sammy Drew, Rhyleigh Durrence, K.C. Cason, Mariah Cameryn and Kinston Cooksey; and numerous nieces, nephews and a brother, Dr. Don Spires.

A funeral service was held Monday, June 23, 2025 at Chapman Funeral Chapel with Brother Nick Roundtree officiating.

A private burial was held Tuesday, June 24, 2025 in the Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Glennville.
