NAHUNTA — A Savannah man stopped for an expired tag violation by the Nahunta Police Department was arrested and charged with an additional four drug-related violations.

Christopher Tibbetts, 49, of Savannah, was stopped while traveling in his 2011 Chevrolet Impala at approximately 12:51 p.m., Tuesday, June 18, 2025, by Detective Jordan Melton with the Nahunta Police Department’s Crime Suppression and Intelligence Unit (CSIU).

The 2011 Chevrolet Impala, traveling within the city limits of Nahunta, had an expired tag. The driver, Tibbetts, was the sole occupant of the vehicle.

During the roadside investigation, Detective Melton observed behavior consistent with potential criminal activity and requested assistance from the department’s K-9 Unit. K-9 “Quick” conducted a free-air sniff of the vehicle and gave a positive alert for the presence of illegal narcotics.

A subsequent search of Tibbetts and the vehicle resulted in the discovery of Gabapentin pills, drug-related objects and marijuana. Following the investigation, Tibbetts was taken into custody and charged with Possession of Methamphetamine, Possession of Marijuana, Possession of Drug-Related Objects, Drugs Not in Original Container, No Insurance, Expired Registration and No Seatbelt.

“The CSIU is committed to proactive policing and targeted enforcement,” said Nahunta Police Chief Brad Todd. “We will continue to pursue those who travel through Nahunta under the influence and endanger the lives of our citizens.

“If you’re trafficking drugs, expect to meet K-9 Quick and our CSIU detectives — we’re watching.”

The Nahunta Police Department remains focused on ensuring public safety through strategic enforcement efforts and community partnership.
