MACON — Pierce County High School’s Elizabeth Griner and Pierce County Middle School’s Gabe Williams grabbed top honors in their respective categories here during this year’s 97th Georgia FFA Convention.
The event was held April 23 through April 26 at the Macon Centreplex.
Griner was first in the Forest Management and Products Proficiency category.
Proficiency awards are granted to FFA members who have excelled in their Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE).
Participants in the Forest Management and Products Proficiency implement best management practices for the conservation, or accumulation, of the economic value of a forest and/or forest products through practices such as thinning, pruning, weeding, stand improvement, reforestation, insect and disease control, planting, and harvesting.
Williams was the state winner in the Home/Community Development Middle School Record Book Competition after winning the Area 6 title.
The Middle School Record Book award program encourages students to begin and maintain a Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) project and keep accurate, detailed records.
In the area of Home/Community Development, students own an enterprise or work for a business that involves improving and protecting the local school or community. The area promotes community development activities such as volunteerism, community development and community betterment.
The area could also include projects related to agricultural communications and agriculture education within school and community.
Sam Chesser finished second in the forestry career development event (CDE).
CDE awards are granted to FFA members and teams who have exhibited premier leadership, personal growth and career success in a variety of competitions.
In the Forestry Career Development Event, students who participate in this CDE demonstrate their skills in diagnosing forest disorders, managing forests and forest inventory and applying approved silviculture practices.
Christopher Clough placed third in the agriscience research plant systems proficiency competition.
Proficiency awards are granted to FFA members who have excelled in their Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE). The Agriscience Plant Systems Research Proficiency involves activities where students research plant life cycles, classifications, functions, and practices through the study of crops, turf grass, trees, shrubs, or ornamental plants.
Pierce County placed third in the senior division Forestry Field Day Career Development Event (CDE).

Agricultural Sales, Marketing and Services Middle School Record Book Competition PCMS’s Sophia Cochran captured the Area 6 honor.

In the area of Agricultural Sales, Marketing and Services, students work for an agriculture related business or do research and experimentation that includes sales of feed, seed, fertilizer or agricultural chemicals.
Students may also work for businesses that involve the sales of agricultural equipment, machinery or structures. Activities may also include the merchandising of crops, livestock, and processed agricultural commodities, at either the retail or wholesale level.
