Sweat uses maps to tell Historical Society of Pierce County origins

Forest Sweat was the featured speaker at the April meeting of the Pierce County Historical and Genealogy Society.

Sweat spoke about the formation of Pierce County.

Sweat used his extensive collection of maps to give a chronological progression of how Pierce County was carved out of the wilderness formerly inhabited by Indians. Maps were presented that dated back to 1747.

During the business meeting, President Bert Walker brought society members up to date on the current news and organization activities, including budget and fund raising information.

Walker is currently spearheading efforts to locate a suitable building to house, store and display historical items such as photos and documents.

The society also participated in the recent Beats and Eats event held in city park. Society members set up information in a vendor tent at Beats and Eats. Fundraising 50/50 tickets were also sold aided by the presence of David Jenkins, dressed as his great-great-great-great grandfather Robert Hendry. Hendry served under Lighthorse Harry Lee during the Revolutionary War.

Meetings and presentations are always interesting and new members are always welcome.

The next meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Monday, July 28, at the Blackshear Train Depot.
