Special to the WJH DOUGLAS — South Georgia State College recently held its Spring Commencement ceremony which included the graduation of its first class of students from the Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering Technology program.
This milestone marks a significant achievement for both the graduates and the college, as well as a promising step forward for the workforce development needs of the region.
The BSMET (Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering Technology program) program is designed to prepare students for diverse, high-demand careers in mechanical engineering and related industries.
With a curriculum built on 124 semester hours—including courses from assoc iate-level studies—graduates leave SGSC equipped with the technical knowledge and hands-on experience required in areas such as mechanical design, product and materials testing, computer drafting, manufacturing, and quality management.
“This graduating class is a reflection of SGSC’s commitment to offering programs that not only provide exceptional academic value, but also directly address the needs of local and regional industries,” said Dr. Charles Johnson, Chairperson of the B. S. in MET Program and Dean of the School of Sciences. “These graduates are now ready to contribute to the economic and technological growth of our communities.”
The BSMET program was developed through a strategic combination of new and existing faculty and curriculum resources. SGSC worked closely with regional employers to en-sure that students gain realworld, relevant experience and knowledge.
The program’s creation is already yielding dividends by enhancing local employment pipelines and offering a cost-effective educational pathway to a promising and stable career.
“This program creates value on multiple levels,” said Dr. Greg Tanner, SGSC Interim President. “It not only addresses the workforce needs of our local industries, but also provides students a valuable opportunity to enhance their technical skills, increase their earning potential, and improve their overall quality of life through a career in mechanical engineering technology.”
The college applauds its inaugural class of BSMET graduates and looks forward to the continued success of this innovative degree program in fueling the growth of Georgia’s workforce.
