WAYCROSS — Mr. Virgil Leo Sweat, Sr., 91, of Waycross, died early Saturday morning, June 14, 2025, at the Hospice Satilla Hospice House after an extended illness.
Sweat was born in Fairfax, Ga., to the late James Estell Sweat and Emma Waters Sweat. He had made Ware County his home for his entire life.
Sweat worked for many years with Reuben Brothers Shoe Factory. He retired as a machine operator for Waycross Molding Products. Sweat was a member of Hosanna Church and a veteran of the United States Army.
Along with his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Annie Colleen James Sweat; two sisters, Juanita Sowell and Emmalene McDaniel; and one brother, James Sweat.
Sweat is survived by two children, Virgil Leo Sweat, Jr. and his wife, Paula, of Nahunta and Lisa Sweeting and her husband, Robert, of Waycross; five grandchildren, Miranda Bowen and her husband, Daniel, of Alma, Holli Sweat of Waycross, Shane Wilson of Waycross, Haley Tiner and her husband, Tyler, of Dixie Union, and Karleigh Sweat of Nahunta; eight great grandchildren, Eli, Anna Jade, Brayden, Jett, Maddy, Ally, Sawyer and Rowan; three sisters, Wilma Murray of Waycross, Ruth Thomas of Waycross and Sadie Musgrove and her husband, Harvey, of Millwood; one brother, Tommy Sweat (Jean) of Waycross; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. today (Wednesday, June 18) at Mt. Green Church of God of Prophecy. A burial will follow in the church cemetery.
