TOWNSEND, Ga. — Walter Edsel McCarty, 73, of Townsend passed away Thursday evening, June 5, 2025, at his residence after a short illness.
He was born in Waycross to the late Herman Sterling McCarty and Juanita Boatright Smith. McCarty worked for Walmart for 20 years in the Douglas and Brunswick stores, and was the owner and operator of E&J Lawn Service for many years. He was a member of Glynn Baptist Church in Thalman.
McCarty enjoyed riding motorcycles, working in the yard, fishing, and especially loved his grandbabies

and great grandbabies.
Along with his parents he was also preceded in death by two children, Clifford McCarty and Amanda McCarty, and one sister, Marie Braddy.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Janet Barnes McCarty; one daughter, Karen Parker-Hendricks (husband Tim) of Hortense; one son, Jeffrey McCarty (fiancé Shannon Cook) of Brunswick; daughter-inlaw, Treasa McCarty of Allenhurst, Ga; seven grandchildren, Gregory Wade Parker, II (Christy), Sara Parker (Hunter Dixon), Kayla Grovenor (Earl Jr.), Austin McCarty (Mikayla Washburn), Aiden McCarty, Trinity McCarty, and Nathaniel McCarty; seven greatgrandchildren; one brother, Wayne McCarty (Melinda) of Brunswick; four sisters, Dorothy West of Tifton, Darlene Burton of Cox, Ga., Connie Poppell (David) of Cresent, Ga., and Bonnie Johnson of Darien; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m., Saturday, June 14 at Glynn Baptist Church in Thalman. A memorial service will follow at 2 p.m. at Glynn Baptist Church with the Rev. Doran Womack and the Rev. Justin Ellis officiating.
