The investigation into the death of Logan Sharpe is now under review by the Waycross Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s (DA) Office and the scheduled court date in state court has been postponed.
District Attorney Marilyn Bennett said Friday she is currently reviewing the investigation into Logan Sharpe’s death and is consulting with the Prosecuting Attorney’s Council of Georgia (PAC) to consider all applicable laws in determining how to proceed.
Bennett said her office initiated the review after Logan’s mother, Shaunte’ Sharpe, reached out requesting whether felony charges can be filed against Dalton Cason, the driver of the truck that struck and killed her son May 19, 2024, on Tyre Bridge Road in Patterson.
“Since that request was made, our office initiated a review of the investigation led by the Georgia State Patrol. We are working with experts in Georgia DUI and traffic law at (PAC) to consider all applicable laws in determining how to proceed,” she said.
Bennett said she is aware of the public’s interest in the case, but her office cannot release any further details and will not make any additional comments at this time.
Cason was arrested February 2, and charged with misdemeanor DUI of alcohol/ controlled substance in connection with the accident.
Under the law, the case would be heard in Pierce County State Court.
The charges were the result of blood and urine analysis and an investigation by the Georgia State Patrol’s Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team (SCRT).
The case had been scheduled to be heard in Pierce County State Court June 19, according to records on PeachCourt, the state’s court docket program.
Clerk of Court Melissa Howard confirmed Friday the case is not on the schedule for June 19.
Howard said the system requires a court date be assigned, but she said that doesn’t mean the case will be heard on that date.
