New recreation complex: Recreation board members discussed the new recreation complex on County Farm Road and renovations and improvements at Ware Street/Yeomans Street. (See related story).
New program coordinator: Constance Drew was introduced as the recreation department’s new program coordinator.

Lights for Tiger Field: Recreation board chairman Chris Wright reported the county had recently approved the purchase of lighting for four poles at Tiger Field in the amount of $287,980. The lights will be purchased from Musco Lighting LLC. Plans are to install the new lighting prior to the beginning of football season in the fall. The lighting is part of overall improvements set for Tiger Field as part of a $343,000 Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) Matching Grant the county received. The county will have to match the grant.
Recreation policy revisions: Chairman Wright presented board members with a revised and updated copy of the department’s policies for review. Board members were asked to review the draft copy and bring their ideas for revisions and changes to the July meeting. Wright told board members they would need to update the Recreation Department’s Foundation to add new board members Wright, Trey Thompson and Stewart to the Foundation’s board of directors. Board member Brad Arington announced that a portion of proceeds from the year’s Freedom Fest will be donated to the recreation department. Freedom Fest is scheduled for June 20 and 21 at Mossy Pond Lodge in Offerman.
Director’s report: Recreation Director Maureen Brown gave the final financial report for spring sports. Baseball and softball revenues have totaled $17,200 for gates and $10,752 for concession with soccer at $3,898 for gates and $1,063 for concessions. Ticket sales were 3,440 for baseball/softball and 779 for soccer. She reported season ticket sales have come to 171 tickets for a total of $5,130. She gave a schedule for district and state tournaments for baseball/ softball. District will be held June 12-16 and state will be held June 24-28. Coach Brown also gave information on the golf program and tennis programs along with the schedule for district and state tournaments. There are seven golf participants and five tennis participants this year. She also updated the board on the department’s new swim team.
New Rec Desk recreation app: Rec. Director Brown reported training is almost complete for the new Rec Desk recreation app. She said plans call for implementing the app for the opening of this year’s fall sports season.
Next meeting: The next monthly meeting will be held at 8 a.m. Tuesday, July 1, at the Southeast Georgia Regional Agriculture Center (SEGARAC) on College Avenue.
