Recent Pierce County High School graduate Alexa Alvarez was selected as the recipient of the first ever Daniel Bennett Scholarship Award.
The scholarship recognizes Alvarez’s outstanding academic achievements and her dedication to helping others by aiding her in becoming a registered nurse. Alvarez had to maintain a grade point average 3.8 or higher to qualify for the new scholarship. Daniel Bennett was an academically talented 2006 graduate of Ware County who lost his life to suicide in 2023. The scholarship was created by Bennett’s family to honor his memory. Father Tim Bennett, mother Melissa Bennett Jones and brothers John and Will Bennett plan to award a scholarship to a qualifying senior each May moving forward.
Daniels Smile, Inc, the organization administering the scholarships, notes that mental health issues are on the rise and will be holding their second annual Suicide Prevention and Awareness Walk from 5-7 p.m. September 13 at Remnant Church.
Supporters are encouraged to join in the walk to honor survivors, those who lost the battle and all the people still struggling.
