County Commission highlights

The Brantley County Board of Commissioners discussed/ voted on the following agenda items during the Tuesday, June 3 work session and Thursday, June 5 monthly meeting.

• County clerk retirement: The commission approved the acceptance of the retirement of County Clerk Rene’ Jacobs after 34 years of service.

Commissioners then approved Deputy Clerk Taylor Sheppard to the position with a probation period. The Board of Commissioners, in conjunction with Mrs. Sheppard, will determine her starting pay.

• Library Board appointment: The commission approved the appointment of Annette Willis to the Library Board Thursday, June 5.

• ACCG Property and Liability renewal: Commissioners gave their approval during the Thursday, June 5 meeting to renew the ACCG Property and Liability $289,012 during the work session.

ACCG Interlocal Risk Management Agency is a pooled risk-sharing program designed to fill the needs of county governments and authorities for property and liability coverage.

Members join together in contributing towards the ACCG – IRMA Fund, which is dedicated to providing cost-effective risk financing, greater stability, more flexibility, and quality loss control services.

•Elevator at Courthouse: County Manager Joey Cason presented a quote of $15,506.91 from Otis Elevator Company to repair the elevator at the Brantley County Courthouse during the Tuesday work session.

During the Thursday meeting, gave approval which includes modifications to comply with the ASME 17.3 Door Lock Monitoring Code. This will be paid out of the Courthouse Building Maintenance.

• Amend the purchase amount of two dryers, two washing machines at the Brantley County Jail: The county manager said an amendment was needed Tuesday, June 3 to adjust the approved purchase price in February for two washing machines and two dryers to the invoice received.

The amount was $2,812 more than the original price, which Cason explained as tariffs being added.

Commissioners unanimously approved the amendment during the June 5 meeting. The funds will come from the Jail SPLOST (Special Local Option Sales Tax) account.

• Cascade System quotes for Waynesville VFD: Cason presented a quote for a Cascade System (breathing air replenishment system) with a low bid of $47,123.52 to commissioners during the June 3 work session.

It is a Bauer Open Vertical Compressor with pressure gauges. The county manager said funding would come from the Waynesvile Volunteer Fire Department funds.

The request was unanimously approved Thursday.

A Cascade System uses multiple high-pressure air cylinders to fill and maintain the SCBA (Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus) bottles used by firefighters. It provides a continuous supply of breathing air to firefighters, ensuring they can stay in a hazardous environment for longer periods.

• Amend the purchase amount of hoses for the Waynesville VFD: The county manager presented an amendment request Tuesday for hoses for the Waynesville VFD from AEST Fire and Safety.

The original approved price was $22,064 rising to $23,167.20 because of tariffs, according to Cason. It would be paid for out of the Waynesville VFD funds.

Commissioners unanimously approved the amended price during the Thursday monthly meeting.

• MOU with Family Connection: Cason presented the annual Memorandum of Understanding with Family Connection during the work session.

It was approved during Thursday’s meeting.

• Waynesville VFD, Hortense VFD agreement: Personnel from the Waynesville VFD and Hortense VFD signed new agreements with the County basically mandating an annual review.

According to the county manger, these agreements will be reviewed on an annual basis.

“This will carry us through the end of this year,” said Cason, “but, I would recommend we review this prior to that.”

The board approved the agreements during the Thursday, June 5 meeting.

• Approval for home bakery in Hortense: Commissioners discussed a Special Exception for a home bakery located at 255 Spell Landing Road in Hortense during a Public Hearing prior to the Tuesday work session.

The board gave its approval Thursday night.

• County Manager report: Cason said there has been a meeting with MCA and INdigital concerning Net Gen 911 (NG911) system for the annex.

“We did this after the quote from INdigital was a little bit higher than what they had provided for us in your last meeting,” said Cason. “I will bring this back to you in July. They’re in the process of finalizing all of their numbers.”

Cason said he was joined by Commissioner Randy Davidson and Commissioner Hal Riggins in the meeting.

“This is going to move us into the next phase of what 911 is in the state,” said Cason.

The county manager stated their has also been a slight price increase on some of the technology stuff in the new building.

“This will not be greater than what they have set aside as far as their contingency is concerned,” said Cason. “We are not having to increase our budget for the building.”

He concluded his report informing commissioners software for the Tax Assessors Office was being purchased.

“Angela (Keene) has this in her budget,” said Cason. “This is a budgeted item, so it’s not something that you (commissioners) have to vote to approve the purchase of. You will have to sign once the invoice comes in and it is a budgeted item in line, item in her budget.”

The Brantley County Commission will have a work session Tuesday, July 1 at 6 p.m., and the regular meeting Thursday, July 3 at 6 p.m.
