Authorities warn of two scams circulating

The Ware County Sheriff’s Office is warning citizens about two scams circulating in the area — one on unpaid traffic tickets and the other for missing jury duty.

The scammers identify themselves as employees of the Georgia Department of Motor Vehicles for the tickets and a Ware County Sheriff’s Office staff member for the other.

The unpaid ticket ruse is the most recent of the two, just appearing in the past week. The one for jury duty surfaced just less than a month ago.

Those involved in the traffic ticket scam are threatening that a “Final Notice” has been issued, and that “Enforcement Penalties” will begin soon. Essentially, the scammers are claiming that an outstanding traffic ticket exists and that it must be paid, the WCSO The scammers go on to say that, if action is not taken, then the matter will cause a report to the DMV violation database, suspension of the person's vehicle registration, suspension of driving privileges, fees charged to the person, prosecution and other negative consequences.

The scammers’ use of Georgia Department of Motor Vehicles is a red flag to start as Georgia has a Division of Driver Services (DDS) and not DMV.

People have responded to the WCSO’s Facebook post last week warning of the ticket scam with screenshots of the text message received attempting to get money.
