South Georgia State College’s two chapters of the Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Honor Society received multiple awards at Georgia’s Spring Regional Conference and PTK’s Catalyst Conference recently. The two chapters recognized were Kappa Sigma and Alpha Rho Omega.

Both chapters were awarded five-star status by using a plan which organizes requirements into five themed categories or “stars” including reach, engage, network, lead and discover. Requirements are completed during each calendar year (January 1 — December 31). The five-star plan is a way to engage chapters in PTK programs and celebrate accomplishments.

Kappa Sigma’s awards at the regional level included a Distinguished Theme Honors in Action Award for Theme 4 – Preserving Stories, a first runner-up award for College Project, and first runner-up in the Top Chapters category. Emma Wilkerson, chapter president, received second runner-up as Distinguished Chapter Officer.

Alpha Rho Omega’s awards at the regional level included a Distinguished Theme Honors in Action Award for Theme 3 – Ways Stories Are Told and third runner-up for College Project, and fourth runner-up in the Top Chapters category.

During the Hallmark Awards ceremony at Catalyst in Kansas City, MO, the Kappa Sigma chapter was awarded the distinction of being one of the top 100 chapters out of approximately 1,250 chapters across the United States and in other countries. Emma Wilkerson of the Kappa Sigma chapter also served as the Georgia Region president this past year. Under her leadership, the Georgia Region received a Regional Award of Excellence in Scholarship and was recognized as a Five Star Region.

Also, during the Hallmark Awards ceremony, Amy Hancock, SGSC chapter advisor and Georgia Regional Coordinator was given the Distinguished Regional Coordinator Award. Distinguished Regional Coordinators are selected by the Society’s executive staff. Selection is based on a coordinator’s encouragement, fellowship and continuity provided to chapters within the region; assistance provided in planning and implementing regional meetings; and direction provided to chapter advisors and regional officers.
