SCHLATTERVILLE — All three people who suffered fatal injuries in a deadly collision May 19 have been identified and the names released by the Georgia State Patrol.
The Monday night accident happened at 11:10 p.m., on State Route 520 (Hwy. 82) and High Bluff Road.
Dickson Isaac Corbett, Sr., 93, of a Waycross address, Michael Daniel Byrd, 20, and his 19-year-old passenger Donavan Spears, died from injuries suffered in the wrongway collision.
GSP did not release the name of a 17-year-old surviving passenger.
A semi, driven by Thomas Anthony Wirsu, 56, and his passenger Wendi Wirsu, 46, were also involved.
According to the accident report of GSP Trooper Chase Middleton, Corbett was driving a 1998 Ford XLT west in the eastbound inside lane of State Road 520. Byrd was traveling east in the eastbound inside lane of State Road 520 in a 2006 Ford Taurus. The Corbett vehicle struck the Byrd vehicle in the front bumper with its front bumper. The 1998 Ford XLT then rotated counterclockwise while traveling approximately 14 feet. It came to an uncontrolled rest in the median facing north. The Byrd vehicle rotated counterclockwise for approximately 24 feet into the outside eastbound lane of travel where it was struck by the 2022 Freightliner driven by Wirsu. The front bumper of the semi struck the left front corner of 2006 Taurus.



During the two impacts, a passenger was ejected from the Byrd vehicle. The passenger traveled approximately 144 feet east coming to a rest in the outside eastbound lane.
The 2006 Ford Taurus traveled 220 feet from impact while rotating counter clockwise before coming to an uncontrolled rest in the median facing northeast.
The 2022 Freightliner continued for approximately 490 feet before coming to a controlled rest on the south shoulder of Georgia State Route 520 facing east.
Corbett and Spears sustained fatal injuries from the crash. Both were pronounced dead at the scene. Byrd died early Tuesday morning (May 20) in Jacksonville, Fla., from his injuries.
