The Brantley County Board of Education discussed/voted on the following agenda items during the Thursday, May 29 called meeting.
• Superintendent’s Update: Dr. Kim Morgan told board members the Friday, May 23 Brantley County High School Class of 2025 graduation was wonderful. There were 183 graduates including 53 Honor graduates.
Dr. Morgan said she joined the 2025 Class A DI state champion Lady Herons and Herons tennis teams for lunch at Olive Garden.
The superintendent said she was joining the all-state band students Monday (June 2) for a trip to the Cheesecake Factory in Jacksonville, Fla.
Dr. Morgan said there is one more trip planned for the state champion Junior four-man forestry team.
“That’s still in the planning stage,” she said. “Richard Gill and Chad Crews are working together on that. We started this last year with our first round of state winners, and so excited to carry that on again.
• Engine replacement for bus 19-01: Dr. Morgan made a recommendation to replace the engine in bus 19-01 at a price not to exceed $11,500.
Transportation Director Jeff Johns informed the board the bus has 216,000 miles.
“If it had less miles, it would probably be better to go and replace the head or rebuild the head and put it back together,” said Johns.
Robbie Roberson Ford will supply the parts with Albritton providing the labor.
The motion passed unanimously. Funding will come from the Transportation Department budget.
• Salary Schedule for Summer Feeding Manager: The superintendent asked for passage of the Salary Schedule for Summer Feeding Manager as presented.
“This is just a pay scale that we needed to make sure we got approved,” said Dr. Morgan.
The motion passed unanimously.
• Personnel: Following a 27minute executive session to discuss personnel, the board returned.
They unanimously approved the retiree resignation of Paula Wainright.
The board unanimously accepted the resignations of Kate Melvin, Atkinson Elementary School teacher; Caitlyn Manning, Nahunta Primary School teacher; Cynthia Santiago, Nahunta Primary School para-pro; Heather Blount, Hoboken Elementary School para-pro; Laura King, Brantley County Middle School teacher; Mollie Woodard, Brantley County High School teacher; Elden Crews, Chief of Police.
Board members unanimously approved the hiring of Christina Cramer and Reagan Bowers as Atkinson Elementary School parapros; Cassie Parker, Nahunta Primary School teacher; Craig Pope, Brantley County High School ELA teacher; Corey Fulton, Brantley County High School PE teacher.
Shawn Lawrence was appointed Chief of Police by a 4-1 vote. Board member Kathy Hendrix voted “no.”
Three community coaches were re-approved to their positions. Mike Hendrix will help coach baseball at Brantley County Middle School being approved 4-0. Board member Kathy Hendrix abstained.
Caleb Worley will help with boys’ soccer at Brantley County Middle School after a unanimous vote.
Thomas Davenport was unanimously approved to work with the Brantley County High School Lady Herons’ basketball program.
