Smoking AC unit delays Honors Night

CANEY BAY — Brantley County High School’s Class of 2025 was honored for its academic success during Honors Night five days before graduation.

The Monday, May 19 event, however, was delayed approximately 30 minutes when a power supply issue short-circuited an air conditioning unit atop the school’s cafeteria causing smoke.

Once the event began around 7 p.m., things went smoothly for the students, their families and friends.

Salutatorian Greyson Winder was recognized for having 12 years of Perfect Attendance. Winder and Valedictorian Margaret Devine were also honored.

There were 29 scholarships handed out during the evening. Also recognized were Outstanding Students in Advanced Academic Pathways, Outstanding Students in CTAE (Career, Technical, & Agricultural Education) Career Pathways, Outstanding Student in World Language, Georgia Seal of Biliteracy, Argenbright Corporate and Airport Summer Internship, Literary Competition, Young Authors, Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and Sons of the American Revolution (SAR).

Scholarship winners were Patrick O’Quinn with the Ava Rose Lightsey award, Sarah Chaney the Brantley County A.C.E. award, Dalton Coon the Brantley County Youth of the Year, Reece Haney the Brantley County Art Association, Carmen Herrin and Carter Reed the Brantley County Friends of the Library.

Miss BCHS Kyndall Dorsey received $1,500 for winning the pageant, Kelsie Bishop $500 for first runner-up, Shaylee Young $250 for second runner-up, with $100 given to the Senior Court consisting of Chloe Carroll, Carmen Herrin, Baylie Hill and Kalynne McKee.

Benjamin Carter was the recipient of the Brantley Superior Plus Propane scholarship, Brody Howell was honored with the Bryant Hayman Scholarship, Thomas Crowley with the Clay & Brooke Thomas Mercer Scholarship, Kalynne McKee with the Coastal Pines Foundation Scholarship, Margaret Devine with the College of Coastal Georgia Compton award, and Reece Haney with the Create Your Way.

CTSO (Career and Technical Student Organization) recipients were Aiden Mobley and Reece Haney with TSA, Braiden Gilbert and Thomas Crowley (AFJROTC), Ayaniah Davenport (FCCLA) and Crowley (HOSA).

Carson Jacobs received the Eric Johns Memorial Scholarship, Garrett Myers and Taylor Rowland were Erin Davison Memorial Scholarship winners, Patrick and Tucker O’Quinn received the SGSC James M. Dye Foundation scholarship, and Colton Thrift was the recipient of the Jamie Carter #23 Scholarship.

There were three Legacy Art Scholarships awarded with Carter Steed receiving $500, Reece Haney $150 and Greyson Winder $150. The Make Your Mark Scholarship was given to Dalton Coon, the Marine Corps Scholarship to Margaret Devine and the “Mr. Mack” Scholarship was presented to Carmen Herrin.

Olivia Whitehead was awarded the OSP Scholarship. Receiving $500 Pepsi Scholarships were Margaret Devine, Greyson Winder, Reece Haney and Dalton Coon. Named REACH Georgia Scholarship winners were Kalynne McKee and Alexa Stull.

Ayaniah Davenport received the Satilla REMC Scholarship and Colton Thrift and Dalton Coon the Vietnam Veterans Scholarship. Receiving the Edgy Farms and Hutcheson Septic Wrestling scholarships were Jonathon Westberry and Dallon Lowe.

Outstanding Students in Advanced Academic Pathways were Reece Haney (English/Language Arts), Garrett Myers (Math), Margaret Devine (Science) and Emma Anderson (Social Studies).

Outstanding Students in CTAE Career Pathways recognized were Braiden Gilbert (AFJROTC), Kalynne McKee (Agriculture and Cosmetology), Aiden Moley (Audio Visual), William Neely (Business), Jonathon Westberry (Culinary Arts), Caden Morgan (Education & Training), Garrett Myers (Engineering), Yahir Galeana-Flores (Gaming Design), Blake Lewis (General Automotive), Nevaeh Elliott (Healthcare Science), Carter Steed (HVAC) and Kyler Knox (Welding).

Kylee Harris was recognized as the Outstanding Student in World Language, Lesley Perez Barajas received the Georgia Seal of Biliteracy, Lila Adams received honors for Literary Competition, Taylor Rowland for Young Authors, Kalynne McKee for DAR and Braiden Gilbert for SAR.

Argenbright Corporate and Airport Summer Internship recipients were Ivee-Jade Crews, Dalton Hickox, Taylor Rowland, Isaiah Bolds, Harley Daniels and James Lovell.
