COLUMBUS — The Brantley County Retired Educators Association received the coveted Unit of Distinction Award along with many other awards during the Georgia Retired Educators Association convention.
BCREA’s Unit of Distinction Award honor was its third consecutive.
“We’re proud of our accomplishments in 202425, and are looking forward to even bigger and better things in 2025-26,” said BCREA president Dr. Tim Sawyer. “We enjoyed a great showing, having received almost every award possible to earn.”
Dr. Sawyer and his wife, Second Vice-President Ruby Ann Sawyer, were on hand to receive the awards earlier in May.
Awards received were for History Update Award (form filled out and submitted), Local Officer Information Sheet (same), Scrapbook Award submitting a scrapbook page created by Projects Chair Ruby Ann Sawyer), and Handbook Award (submitting a thorough and up-to-date handbook and bylaws, also created and maintained by Ruby Ann Sawyer), Newsletter Award (at least two chapter newsletters must be created and distributed through the year - creations of Ruby Ann Sawyer), Public Relations Award (evidence submitted the chapter publicizes its meetings, projects, etc. - many thanks to The Brantley Beacon media outlet!!!), Scholarship Award (education- based scholarship given annually - awarded this year to BCMS paraprofessional Annette Todd), Local Unit Service Project Award (evidence provided the chapter engages in community service projects — BCREA’s mid-year student school supply drive, large-print materials for seniors drive, and support for the state president’s humanitarian project “Make-AWish Georgia”), Seven percent Membership Growth and 12% Membership Growth Awards.
“I would like to send out my appreciation to all BCREA members who worked in various ways to make these awards possible,” said Dr. Sawyer.
He also wants to invite all Brantley County retired educators, as well as those who retired from other school sytems and reside in Brantley County, to become members and see the many things BCREA offers, as well as what they can offer the organization!
BCREA will take a break for the summer, though the leadership is still working hard to ensure a good year in 202526. The next meeting is tentatively scheduled for September, which likely could be a reception for newly retired educators.
BCREA and GREA (Georgia Retired Educators Association) means retirees from both certified and classified positions — teachers, admin., parapros, custodians, bus drivers, secretaries, lunch ladies, etc.
“All education supporters are invited to come be a part of our organizations as well,” Dr. Sawyer said.
