Early voting began Tuesday, May 27 for the Georgia Public Service Commission Special Primary, Tuesday, June 17.
Early voting for candidates in PSC Districts 2 and 3 is 8 a.m.-5 p.m. weekdays through Friday, June 13 at the Ware County Board of Elections office, 408 Tebeau Street. Election Day voting is 7 a.m.-7 p.m. at the county’s 11 voting locations.
Districts 2-3 are at-large posts on the PSC, meaning they’re chosen by the entire state. Ware County is in District 1, which represented by Chairman Jason Shaw, whose seat is not up.
Republican Tim Echols is the incumbent in District 2, and he faces Lee Muns in the primary. Democrat Alicia Johnson is running unopposed.
In District 3, Republican incumbent Fitz Johnson has no primary opposition. There are four Democrat candidates — Daniel Blackman, Keisha Sean Waites, Peter Hubbard, and Robert Jones.
With four Democrat candidates, there likely could be a runoff since the winner must receive 50 percent of the vote plus one. The runoff would be Tuesday, July 15 between the two candidates with the highest vote totals.
Primary winners will meet Tuesday, November 4. If a runoff is needed following that voting, it will be held Tuesday, December 2.
Those who request an absentee ballot for the primary must do so again for the runoff. The Georgia Secretary of State office has ruled absentee ballots used for special elections such as this aren’t eligible for “rollover” status.
Voting would normally have been held in an evennumbered year like 2024, but a lawsuit moved that year’s cycle of districts back a year. The suit regarded the at-large nature of PSC elections.
The suit was dismissed in June 2024, which was too late to have the election at its regularly scheduled interval in November 2024.
