BES bomb threat came from Australia

A bomb threat at Blackshear Elementary as school wound down last week apparently came from “down under”.

Blackshear Police Chief Chris Wright said an artificial intelligence (AI) generated bomb threat was called in to the county’s largest elementary school Friday, May 9. The phone call appears to have originated in Australia and because of the time difference was called in after school had dismissed for the day Friday.

The threat was unfounded. “Fortunately, it didn’t disrupt school. Apparently it was sent on an Australian time zone instead of Eastern Daylight Time (EDT). We had all weekend to deal with the alleged threat.”

Wright said a search was conducted at Blackshear Elementary and at every school in the system.

“We conducted a search of all of the schools in the system.” said Wright. “We even called in bomb sniffing dogs and nothing was found.”

The incident is still under investigation.
