The Exchange Club of Blackshear recently welcomed Julie Tanner, Director of Community Engagement for Hospice Satilla, as a guest speaker. Tanner shared insight into her role at Hospice Satilla and her leadership of the Junior Board of Directors.
The Junior Board is an outreach initiative aimed at involving high school students in community service and Hospice awareness.
Tanner spoke of her passion for educating students about Hospice Satilla and helping them understand compassionate end of life care.
One of the Junior Board’s largest impacts is the Cowboys for Kids project, a one-day annual event hosted at the Ware County Saddle Club. Students on the board take an active role in planning the event, securing sponsorships and promoting a fun-filled day. Cowboys for Kids features vendors, food trucks, arts and crafts and local organizations offering information and community resources.
Children can enjoy bounce houses, train rides, face painting, games, and even a mechanical bull. The day wraps up with an exciting barrel race presented by Roll the Dice Productions. All proceeds raised by the Junior Board benefit “Camp Hope”, a free, oneday grief counseling camp held each fall for children and teens who have lost a loved one.
Camp Hope provides a safe, supportive environment for young people to process grief and begin healing-with the help of social workers, counselors, chaplains and other Hospice Satilla employees and volunteers.
“The Exchange Club of Blackshear is honored to support the mission of Hospice Satilla and the incredible work being done by the Junior Board of Directors,” says President-Elect Stacey Thrift.
Hospice Satilla currently has Junior Boards in Pierce, Ware and Brantley Counties.
