City thanks Tifton for support in Helene aftermath

TIFTON — The City of Waycross expressed its gratitude to Tifton Mayor Julie Smith for her dedication and support of the community in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene Waycross City Manager Ulysses “Duke” Rayford presented Smith with the Kennedy L. Sanders Outstanding Citizen Achievement Award Friday, May 2 for her efforts and those of the city as a whole in aiding in Waycross’s recovery effort after the devastating storm had torn through the city.

In the storm’s aftermath, the City of Tifton lent a generator to Waycross, providing it a power source to keep the vital systems of the city up and running while city staff members continued to work on restoration.

“The City of Tifton, under the leadership of Mayor Julie Smith, demonstrated extraordinary generosity and solidarity in our time of need,” Waycross Mayor Michael-Angelo James said. “Their swift action in lending a generator to Waycross ensured that our vital city systems remained operational during a critical period of recovery.

“This act of kindness and cooperation exemplifies the strength of community and the unwavering commitment to helping neighbors in times of crisis.”

Smith received a certifi- cate and a commemorative railroad spike from Downtown Waycross as a sign of appreciation for her and the city’s support and kindness.

Mayor James also provided Smith a letter thanking her for the aid, commenting on the two cities’ ability to overcome hardship through their cooperation and solidarity.

“Mayor Smith’s recognition with the Kennedy L. Sanders Outstanding Citizen Achievement Award is well-deserved, as it reflects not only her leadership but the collective efforts of the City of Tifton in standing with Waycross during a challenging time,” Mayor James said. “We are deeply grateful for their support and proud to celebrate this partnership.”
