WCHS thinclads record four Top 8 showings to medal

COMMERCE — Ware County had three individuals and a relay team cop Top 8 finishes to medal here at East Jackson High School during the two-day Class 4A state meet.

The Lady Gators finished 27th with six points in the field of 41 teams who scored points during the Friday, May 9 and Saturday, May 10 finals. Westminster won its third consecutive 4A title and fourth straight (2022 3A) clipping Harris County by three points, 69-66.

The rest of the Top 10 consisted of Cambridge (58), Pace Academy (56), Southwest DeKalb (52), Starr’s Mill (42), Jonesboro (28), Kell (27), North Oconee (26) and Central (24).

Warner Robins topped Region 1 members tying for 20th with nine points. New Hampstead was the only other member to garner points tying for 40th with one point.

The Gators tied for 31st with seven points amongst the 44 schools represented with points. Starr’s Mill (42 points) captured its first title with a two-point victory over Cartersville and Region 1 member Benedictine, who tied for second with 40 points.

The trio were followed by Marist (33), Eagle’s Landing (30), Mays (30), Cambridge (29), Griffin (28), Southwest DeKalb (28), defending champion Westminster (26) and Central (26).

Other Region 1 schools to score were New Hampstead, who tied for 28th with eight points, Perry, who tied for 31st with WCHS with seven points, and Warner Robins, who registered one point to tie for 43rd.

Girls’ meet

Shardell Vickers and the 4x100-meter relay team each finished sixth in their respective events to lead the Lady Gators.

Vickers recorded a mark of 36’8.5” in the shot put for her sixth-place showing. The winning mark was 39’11”.

She also placed 14th in the discus with a throw of 89’4” with the winning distance set at 133’7”. The eighth-place medal spot was 103’1”.

The 4x100 relay team finished sixth with a time of 49 seconds. The winning time was 47.18 seconds. The Lady Gators also finished sixth in the preliminary heats posting a time of 48.78 seconds. The best pre-lim time was 47.06 seconds.

Destiny Finney placed 10th in the shot put with a heave of 33’11”. The eighth-place medal spot was 35’11”.

Jada Evans finished 13th in the long jump event flying 34’11”. The winning distance was 41’11” with the eighthplace medal mark at 35’7.5”.

Boys’ meet

Isaiah Grayer and David Muchison each claimed medals in the pole vault event finishing fifth and sixth respectively.

Grayer tied his school mark of 13’6” with Muchison posting a career-best of 13 feet. The winning height was 15 feet.

Cameron King placed 14th in the triple jump with a leap of 42’5.75”. The winning mark was 48’5” with the last spot to medal at 44’3.5”.
