Lady Herons and Herons play today; Lady Bears on the road Thursday, Bears host today
THOMASTON — Brantley County’s and Pierce County’s tennis teams had their championship aspirations put on hold with Friday’s announcement postponing the tournament.
The Georgia High School Association cancelled Saturday’s semifinals and championships at the Rome Tennis Cen-ter with the May 9 announcement just after lunch.
GHSA’s decision was based on the forecast of rain in northwest Georgia over the weekend.
The semis and finals will now be played at the highest seeded schools. Top-seed Brantley County’s girls and boys would host both rounds.
Pierce County’s second- seed Bears would host a semifinal match and play on the road in the finals. The seventhseed Lady Bears will be on the road for the final two matches.
The semifinals will be played Tuesday, May 13 and Wednesday, May 14 across the state. Buffer dates of Thursday, May 15 and Friday, May 16 have been set aside for the semifinals in the event of additional rain early this week.
The finals are scheduled for Saturday, May 17 and Monday, May 19.
The Class A Division I girls’ “Final Four” has three Region 1 members playing. No. 1 seed Lady Herons host Region 1 foe and No. 12 seed Berrien today (Wednesday) at 2 p.m. Seventh-seed Region 1 member Jeff Davis travels to sixth-seed Armuchee. The winners face off at the highest remaining seed.
The Lady Herons, the 2024 Class AA state champion, are making a fourth consecutive appearance in the “Final Four” and fifth overall (2014, 2022-25).
The top-seeded Herons are hosting fifth-seed Model while seventh-seed ACE Charter travels to third-seed Bleckley County today (Wednesday) at 11 a.m.. The winners face off at the highest The Herons are also making a fourth consecutive appearance in the “Final Four” and 10th overall (2008, 2011-13, 2016, 2018, 2022-25). BCHS lost in the 2022 finals to Westminster.
The Lady Bears are traveling to third-seed Columbus Thursday. The other pairing has fifthseed Sonoravlle at Region 3 top-seed Appling County. The finals will be played at the highest seed.
Pierce County is making its fourth appearance in the “Final Four” (2012, 2013, 2023).
The Bears, who are making their third appearance in the “Final Four” are hosting 14th-seed Sonoraville today at 2:30 p.m.. Top-seed Murray County will host fourthseed Columbus.
PCHS also appeared in the “Final Four” in 1994 and 2014.
