Graduation will be held this Friday night for Pierce County High School. The Times staff and I have been diligently working on our annual senior tribute section, and it’s always such a joy to put together at this time of year. Seeing the proud smiles on the faces of parents and grandparents as they witness this significant milestone, the closing of one chapter and the exciting beginning of another, is truly heartwarming.
This always brings back vivid memories of my own graduation from high school in June of 1993, which feels like just yesterday. While I certainly don’t claim to be the smartest or the most successful person in the world, I have accumulated some valuable life lessons over the years that I feel compelled to share with you as you embark on your own journeys.
First, I wholeheartedly encourage you to go to college now. Please don’t wait. I can promise you that it’s an experience you will not regret. Second, cultivate a habit of reading. Read everything you can get your hands on – books, articles, anything that sparks your interest. Third, commit to doing whatever you undertake to the absolute best of your ability. Your dedication will shine through. Fourth, and this is crucial, start saving money now. Your parents are absolutely right – save, save, save. Begin to invest in your future by contributing to some sort of retirement plan. Believe me, when I say that the years will pass more quickly than you can imagine, and you will be grateful for the preparation. Fifth, diligently work towards your goals, but always remember that achieving meaningful things takes time and perseverance.
Finally, make a conscious effort to live within your means. As my Papa used to wisely say, “you can’t borrow yourself rich.” Finally, prioritize your health and treat your body well. You will rely on it for the entirety of your life, so invest in its well-being.
Today truly marks the first day of the rest of your life. Take a moment to express your sincere gratitude to your parents and your teachers for the immense time and effort they have poured into this important chapter of your life.
As my inspiring senior English teacher, Mr. Jon Smith, would enthusiastically say: Carpe Diem!
