Pierce County Commission Highlights

(The Pierce County Board of Commissioners discussed and/or voted on the following during their regular meeting Tuesday, May 6. ) Recreation complex: Commissioners approved moving forward with plans for a new recreation complex on County Farm Road and renovations at the Ware/Yeomans Street facility. (See related story.)

Public defender investigator: Joshua Larkey, circuit public defender of the Waycross Judicial Circuit, asked commissioners to allow him to reserve a portion of the refund provided to the county after each year’s budget for the next three years. The current year’s refund is $24,454.67. Larkey requests that $9,763.27 be used over the next three years to fund the investigator’s position. The county will receive a refund of $16,691.40. Larkey said the funds would be used to help fund an investigator’s position for his office. Larkey said he has hired a fully certified, retired GBI agent as a full-time investigator for his office.

Surplus sale: Commissioners approved a list of items to be declared surplus including a house at 5256 County Farm Road, Blackshear and a mobile home at 6502 Hacklebarney Drive that will both need to be moved, a 2004 Caterpillar, a 2006 Ford F 1-50 and 2016 Ford F-450, 2018 Ford F 150 super crew, 1985 Chevrolet knocker fire truck, 1980 Ward Lafrance fire truck, 1979 Ward Lafrance fire truck, a 2006 Ford Ranger, a 2000 Mazda, a 1999 International dump truck, a 20018 International dump truck and a 2003 Ford F-150.

Closed session: Commissioners adjourned into a 15 minute closed session to discuss personnel. No action was taken following the closed session.

Rezoning approved: The board approved rezoning a 0.57 acre parcel of land located at 3590 Georgia Highway 32 in Bristol. Owner Dan Hodges asked that the land be rezoned from multi-family to commercial. A public hearing was held prior to the commission meeting. There was no public opposition to the rezoning request.

State champion: Dathan Thornton, state champion in the discus in Georgia Recreation and Parks Association’s track and field competition, was recognized during the meeting.

Pledge leader: Deputy Jack Golub of the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office led the pledge of allegiance.

Invocation leader: Bishop Isiah Brown, pastor of Warren Grove Apostolic Church in Savannah, led the meeting’s opening prayer.

Next meeting: The next regular commission meeting will take place at 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 3, at the Southeast Georgia Regional Agriculture Center in Blackshear.
