Tennis ‘Final Four’ postponed; Bears host Sonoraville, Lady Bears travel

Special to The Beacon THOMASTON — Pierce County’s tennis teams had their championship aspirations put on hold with Friday’s announcement postponing the tournament.

The Georgia High School Association canceled Saturday’s semifinals and championships at the Rome Tennis Center with the May 9 announcement just after lunch.

GHSA’s decision was based on the forecast of rain in northwest Georgia over the weekend.

The semis and finals will now be played at the highest seeded schools.

Pierce County’s second-seed Bears is hosting a semifinal match and could play on the road in the finals. The seventhseed Lady Bears will be on the road for the final two matches.

The semifinals will be played Tuesday, May 13 and Wednesday, May 14 across the state. Buffer dates of Thursday, May 15 and Friday, May 16 have been set aside for the semifinals in the event of additional rain early next week.

The finals are scheduled for Saturday, May 17 and Monday, May 19.

The Lady Bears are traveling to third-seed Columbus. The other pairing has fifth-seed Sonoraville at Region 3 top-seed Appling County. The finals will be played at the highest seed.

Pierce County is making its fourth appearance in the “Final Four” (2012, 2013, 2023). PCHS fell 3-0 to Westminster in 2012, 3-0 to Woodward Academy in 2012 and 3-2 to Berrien in 2023. The Bears, who are making their third appearance in the “Final Four” are hosting 14thseed Sonoraville. Top-seed Murray County will host fourth-seed Columbus in the other semifinal pairing.

PCHS also appeared in the “Final Four” in 1994 and 2014. The Bears lost 3-2 to North Hall in 1994 and 3-1 to Woodward Academy in 2014.
