COMMERCE — Pierce County’s Omar Jinks medaled in two events and five other thinclads recorded Top 8 finishes here at East Jackson High School during the two-day Class 4A state meet.
Jinks finished fifth in both the 100-meter and 200m events held Friday, May 9 and Saturday, May 10. Three Lady Bears and four Bears joined Jinks.
The seven medals broke the school mark of five set in 1993 (second-place finish) and matched in 2021.
Jinks’ two medals matches Makalani “Boo” Williams (1995, second and fourth) and Quayvon Hicks (2012, first and second) for second-most. Maleek Chandell holds the record with three (first, second and fourth) in 2021.
The Lady Bears’ individual mark is four by Tiffany Collins (three first; third in 400m relay) in both 1992. Collins also won three in 1992 (first, two seconds. She posted a first- and second-place finish in 1991. Alexis Shaw finished first and second in 2016.
The Lady Bears placed 26th with six points among the teams registering points. Carver-Atlanta won its first girls’ title edging out Shaw 61-58.
The top two teams were followed in the Top 10 by Washington (58), Columbus (55), Redan (44), Region 3 member Savannah Arts Academy (44), Sonoraville (33), Region 3 member Appling County (33), Miller Grove (32.5) and Rockmart (31).
Other Region 3 members scoring were Cook, who finished 19th with 12 points) and Crisp County, who tied for 31st with two points.
The Bears’ 17 points earned an 18th-place finish among the 37 schools netting points. The Top 10 consisted of first-time champion KIPP Atlanta Collegiate (56), Franklin County (47), host East Jackson (42.5), Redan (39), Therrell (32), Laney of Augusta (31), Hart County (30), Region 3 member Appling County (28), Shaw (27) and Washington (26).
Three other Region 3 members also scored. Crisp County finished 22nd with 15 points, Tattnall County was 29th with eight points and Savannah Arts Academy placed 37th with one point.
Girls’ meet
Kora Good and Kaitlyn Sapp recorded fifth-place finishes to lead the Lady Bears.
Good was fifth in the high jump clearing the bar at 4’10” with the winning height set at six foot. Sapp recorded an 8’6” height in the pole vault to trail the winning mark of 11 foot.
Caren Drew finished 10th in the discus with a throw of 91’2”. The winning mark was 120’8” with the 8th-place medal spot at 95’1”.
Drew finished 14th in the shot put with a heave of 31’3”. The winning distance was 41’8” with the eight-place medal slot at 33’3”.
PCHS’s 4x100-meter relay team posted a 52second preliminary run for 15th-lace. The best prelim time was 46.36 seconds with an eighthplace time of 49.95 seconds. The final winning time was 47.53 seconds.
Boys’ meet
Jinks recorded fifthplace finishes in the 100m and 200m events after qualifying second and fourth in the preliminary heats.
He ran a 10.60-second 100m in qualifying trailing only a 10.39 mark. Jinks posted a 11.14-second run in the finals. The winning time was 10.79 seconds.
Jinks posted a 22.02-second 100m in the pre-lim to place fourth behind a winning time of 21.27 seconds. He was clocked at 22.80 seconds in the finals. The winning time was 22.16 seconds.
PCHS’s 4x400m relay team ran to a fifth-place showing with a time of 3:30.71. The winning time was 3:26.
Joe Drew was sixth in the triple jump with a leap of 43’9.25”. The winning mark was 47’10” Amir McKenzie placed seventh in the high jump clearing the bar at 6’2”. The winning height was 6’8”.
The 4x100m relay team finished 11th in the pre-lims with a time of 43.22 seconds. The winning pre-lim time was 41.25 seconds with the eighth-place cut at 42.66 seconds. The final winning time was 42.12 seconds.
