University of Georgia

Several Pierce County residents were among the more than 8,000 candidates for graduation in the Class of 2025 to be celebrated by the University of Georgia during commencement ceremonies last week.

Graduates include Luke Bennett, Jackson Echols, Joseph Hopkins, Andrew Peacock, Hugh Saussy, Katiana Schreiber and Sage Young of Blackshear and Mary Baker, Caroline Herrin and Kirsten Raulerson of Patterson.

South Georgia State College

Nine Pierce County residents were among South Georgia State College Students recognized recently for outstanding achievement or for students service awards.

Thirty-six students received awards for outstanding achievement in academics, leadership and community involvement during Academic Year 2024-2025 and 23 individuals received Student Choice Awards. The recipients were students, faculty, campus safety, staff members, student clubs and events. SGSC students solely selected the recipients for these awards.

Pierce County students who were recognized include: Most Creative Student – Angelica Mitchell. The Kit Carson Education Award – Cheyann New. Dr. Pam Stille Quinn Award for Excellence in Humanities – Harlee Costa.

Libba Burch Award for Excellence in Nursing – Marybeth Chancey.

Dr. Jim Cottingham Leadership Award – Savannah Strickland.

Most Athletic Student – A.J. Waters. Most Creative Student – Denise Thornton. Most Involved Student – Savannah Strickland. Most Reliable and Helpful Student – Marybeth Chancey.
