Sherry Hawes Smith, 90, of Blackshear, passed away early Saturday morning, May 10, 2025, at her residence, following an extended illness.

Born March 22, 1935 in Ocilla, she was a daughter of the late Russell Bascom and Dessa Lillian Daniels Hawes. She grew up in Ocilla and graduated from Irwin County High School. She lived in Waycross and Brunswick before moving to Pierce County in 1983. She had worked several secretarial jobs and owned her own business for several years, but much of her life was focused on taking care of her household duties and her husband, children and family. She was a member of Hacklebarney Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Taft Eugene Smith, and a granddaughter, Shelly N. Smith.
Survivors include her daughter, Diane Boren (husband Perry), Arley, Alabama; two sons, David Smith (wife Kathy), Blackshear and Gerald Smith (wife Leah), Ivey; 10 grandchildren: Steven Fletcher (wife Jessica), and Amanda Parsons (husband Alan), all of Jasper, AL, Caroline McDade (husband Kyle), Milledgeville, Kelly Sowell (husband Justin), Gray, Jason Shadron (wife Amy), Chris Smith (wife Ashley), Traci Ramey (husband Justin), Staci Lucas (husband Sonny), Jason Sullivan (wife Kelly) and Jerica Edwards, all of Blackshear; 27 great-grandchildren and one on the way, Caleb Smith, Carley Smith, Sam Fletcher, Lillian Fletcher, Amelia Fletcher, August Parsons, Cody McDade, Whitely McDade, Henry McDade, Noah Sowell, Cooper Sowell, Drew (Kalyssa) Shadron, Ethan Shadron, Arley Smith, Adley Smith, Crew Smith, Tyler Ramey, Tucker Ramey, Calli Lucas, Seth Lucas, Eli Sullivan, Brenden Sullivan, Layla Sullivan, Kree Sullivan, Aydon Head, Matthew Head, Madison Head and expected soon, Hinson Edwards; two brothers, Roger C. Hawes (wife Lynn), Snellville and J. Merwin Hawes (wife Betty), Ocilla; special friend, Bonnie Roberts, Ocilla and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Visitation will be held from 10-11 a.m. Tuesday, May 13, at the funeral home.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 13, from the chapel of Hart Funeral Home.
