Nahunta council proposes largest ever city budget

NAHUNTA — The City of Nahunta could be operating under its largest budget ever.

City leaders gathered Tuesday, April 29 to finish up talks with both the Water and Sewer proposed budgets totaling $1,235,881. Added to the proposed General Fund budget of $1,546,720, the City’s proposed Fiscal Year 2025-26 budget totals $2,782,601.

City Clerk Angie Wirth gave the council, attended by Mayor Marty Lee, Mayor Pro-tem Bruce Davis, Councilman Andrew Altman, and Councilwomen Crystal Johns and Deloise Anderson, an update to the General Fund.

“I’ve reworked the budget,” said Wirth. “It is balanced at $1,546,720.”

Wirth also informed the council there has to be separate budgets for the Water Department and Sewer Department, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

“We have to have separate budgets for the two departments,” The Water Department will have a proposed budget of $375,314, down from the $665,000 total for both department’s last year. The Sewer Department’s proposed budget is $860,567.

Because of the new sewer system, the budget two biggest line items are electricity projected at $200,000 and professional service fees of $100,000.

The system will utilize a lot of electricity running 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The professional services is for servicing the sewer plant and all the lab work associated with the new facility to stay within EPA guidelines.

The budget has $135,000 for Repairs & Maintenance (vehicles, pumps, sprayfield, and water/sewer lines. Fuel and chemicals, along with supplies are budgeted at $55,000 eating up 57 percent of the budget.

The council will hold two budget hearings in May for the general public before acting on passage possibly at the June 2 monthly meeting. If adopted, the FY25-26 budget would go into effect July 1.
