Three Lady Herons, one Heron headed to track finals

COCHRAN — Brantley County’s Lady Herons qualified three tracksters and the Herons had one qualify for the Class A Division I finals with their performances here Saturday at Bleckley County High School in the Sectional A meet.

The May 3 Sectional consisted of Regions 1, 2, 3 and 4 consisting of athletes representing 28 schools. The top eight from the A and B Sectionals advance to the two-day state meet in Rome scheduled for Friday, May 9 and Saturday, May 10.

The Lady Herons will be represented by Mailey Thigpen (discus), Avery Crews (1,600meter) and Mallory Crosby (300m hurdles).

Malachi Saunders will compete in the event after winning the Sectional A meet.

Girls’ meet

Thigpen posted the Lady Herons’ best finish placing fifth in the discus with a throw of 100’5”. The winning distance was 117’9” with the Sectional B winning distance at 135’4”.

Crews placed sixth in the 1,600m event with a time of 6:00.78. The winning time for Sectional B was 5:02.42.

Crosby qualified with an 8thplace showing in the 300m hurdles posting a time of 50.84 seconds beating the ninth-place time of 51.01 seconds. The winning time was 45.29 seconds. The winning time in Sectional B was 46.69 seconds.

Klara Barnes just missed earning a berth in the 1,600m finishing ninth with a time of 6:07.44. The eighth-place time was 6:05.75.

Crews finished 14th in the 800m with a time of 2:54.27. She trailed the winning time of 2:24.96 and eighth-place time of 2:43.57.

Boys’ meet

Saunders finished in a fourway tie in the high jump event clearing the bar at 6’2”. He was joined by Kyler Johnson of Dodge County, Ross Hamrick of Lamar County and Bill Waters of Putnam County. The Sectional B winning mark was 5’10”.

Hayze Evans just missed out with a pair of ninth-place finishes in the 800m and 1,600m events. Evans posted a time of 2:11 in the 800m with the eighth-place time being 2:10.58.

His time of 4:46.76 in the 1,600m trailed the eighth-place time of 4:46.49. The winning time was 4:36.28.

BCHS’s 4x100m relay team consisting of Daesean Hutcheson, Malachi Saunders, Nathan Howell and Devein Saunders finished 14th with a time of 47.54 seconds. The winning time was 42.25 seconds with an eighth-place time of 44.18 seconds.

The 4x400m relay team made up of Devein Saunders, Jayden Simmons, Howell and Evans also finished 14th with a time of 3:44.37. The winning time was 3:23.42 with an eighth-place time of 3:34.30.
