Six individuals, three relay teams qualify for state

COMMERCE — Pierce County is sending six individuals and three relay teams to the Class AA state finals’ track meet with their performances here Saturday in the Sectional B meet at East Jackson High School.

The two-day finals consists of the top eight qualifiers in each event from the A and B sectionals. The event is also be contested at East Jackson Friday, May 9 and Saturday, May 10.

Sectional B, with Regions 2, 3, 4 and 8, featured thinclads from 25 schools.

The Lady Bears will be led by Kora Good, who recorded the lone victory for PCHS, capturing the high jump in the May 3 meet. Caren Drew qualified in both the discus and shot put.

Kaitlyn Sapp secured a berth in the pole vault and the 4x100meter relay team advanced.

The Bears will be led by Omar Jinks, who qualified in both the 100m and 200m events. Joe Drew will participate in the triple jump and Amir McKenzie in the high jump.

Also qualifying were the 4x100m relay team and the 4x400m relay team.

Girls’ meet

Good set the mark in the high jump clearing 4-foot-8 for the win. The Sectional A winning height was 5’2”.

Caren Drew placed third in the discus with a throw of 101’10”. The winning distance was 104’9”. Top mark in Sectional A was 127’.

Drew finished seventh in the shot put with a heave of 32’7”. The top mark was 35’5.5” with the eighth-place mark at 32’5”.

Sapp placed fourth in the pole vault clearing the bar at 6’6”. The winning height was 9’ with all seven participants advancing to the finals.

PCHS’s 4x100m relay team posted the eighth-fastest time (52.16 seconds) to clinch the final berth in the event. The winning time was 49.21 seconds.

Zanyria Monroe, Azalea Mobley and the 4x400m relay suffered heartbreak with nine-place finishes.

Monroe’s time of 51.56 seconds in the 300m hurdles was .03 onehundredths of a second behind the eighth spot of 51.53 seconds. The winning time was 47.10 seconds.

Mobley recorded a distance of 15’9” in the long jump falling three inches short in the distance to advance of 16’. The winning mark was 16’11”.

The 4x400m relay team’s time of 4:32.98 trailed the eighth-place spot by 1.02 seconds (4:31.92). The winning time was 4:18.94.

Mobley also suffered another tough decision finishing 10th in the 100m event posting a time of 13.01 seconds falling short by .06 hundredths of second (12.95 seconds). The winning time was 12.03 seconds.

The 4x200m relay team finished 12th with a time of 1:56.76. The winning time was 1:47.67 with an eighthplace time of 1:52.17.

Layla Chandel ran to a 14th-place showing in the 400m recording a time of 1:08.87. The fastest time was 59.21 seconds with an eighth-place time of 1:02.50.

Boys’ meet

Jinks captured his heats in the 100m and 200m, but his times were second overall. He posted a 10.82-second 100m to trail the winning time of 10.65. The winning time in Sectional A was 10.59 seconds.

Jinks was clocked at 22.40 seconds in the 200m trailing the winning time of 22.08 seconds. The top time in Sectional A was 21.15 seconds.

Joe Drew placed third in the triple jump flying 43’7”. The winning mark was 46’5.25” and a foot better than the Sectional A winning distance.

McKenzie was third in the high jump clearing the bar at 5’10”. The winning height for both Sectionals was 6’.

PCHS’s 4x400m relay team also placed third posting a time of 3:30.22 trailing the winning time of 3:27.16. Sectional A recorded three faster times led by a 3:22.50.

The 4x100m relay team clocked a time of 43.60 seconds to place fourth. The winning time was 42.15 seconds. Sectional A’s top time was 42.26 seconds.

Drew finished 10th in the 400m with a time of 52.02 seconds — .14 hundredths of a second off the eighth-place time of 51.88. The winning time was 50.12 seconds.

The 4x800m relay team logged a 14th-place showing posting. time of 9:38.32. The winning time was 8:30.86 with an eighth-place time of 8:56.84.

Both Sam Braddock and Jordan Williams placed 15th in their respective events. Braddock had a distance of 18’.05” in the long jump. The winning mark was 22’5” with an eighth-place distance of 20’4.5”.

Williams heaved the shot put 40’1”. The winning mark was 55’6” with an eighth-place distance of 43’9.5”.
