The new, old gym at PCHS now has a new, new name: the PCHS Indoor Sports Complex.
Salvaged from the demolition of the old PCHS, the new gym will have new life as the site of basketball games and other events.
Facilities Director Harbin Farr gave an update on the indoor sports complex at the school board’s monthly work session Thursday morning.
Harbin said the complex was scheduled to be turned over to the school system at the end of spring break, but delays with painting, heating, ventilation and cooling (HVAC) and electrical work kept that from happening.
“Work will be completed soon and the complex will be ready for use for next school year.
Renovations to the new, indoor sports complex have been underway since last June. The project also saw the demolition of the remainder of the old PCHS building. The old PCHS building had sat empty since the opening of the new PCHS in 2020. R. H. Tyson Construction of Blackshear has done the demolition and renovation work on both phases of the project. R.H. Tyson Construction bid $4.918 million for the project.
In addition to basketball, the indoor sports complex can be used for wrestling, cheerleading and other programs. The facility has also been used by other groups including the 4-H BB teams. The front classroom there will be the site of Gateway, the high school’s alternative school. Gateway has been housed in mobile units behind the old high school, far removed and hidden from view of the new school.
The space the old school sat on will be converted to and maintained as a grassy area used for parking.
Farr said the area will be available for use for parking for the May 16 graduation ceremony.
