WAYCROSS — Mrs. Thelma Sherrod Whitrock Melton, 86, passed away Friday, April 25, 2025, at Waycross Health and Rehabilitation following an extended illness.
Mrs. Melton was born in Berrien County to the late Wesley B. Sherrod, Sr. and Willie Mae Edge Sherrod. After high school, she moved to Medaryville, Ind., where she was the former owner and operator of Whitrock’s New and Used Furniture.
Mrs. Melton eventually returned to Waycross and started a residential and commercial cleaning business. She was also employed at Hampton Inn of Waycross as a breakfast hostess for a number of years. Mrs. Melton was a member of Jordan Church in Dixie Union.
In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by two sons, Kevin Whitrock and Kenton Whitrock; a grandson, Kendall Whitrock; a brother, Wesley B. Sherrod, Jr.; and her former husbands, Kensil O. Whitrock and Ed Melton.
Mrs. Melton is survived by a son, Kenneth Whitrock of Medaryville, Ind.; six grandchildren, Kayla Light, Kaylee Whitrock, Kristina Whitrock, Kanyon Whitrock, Kade Whitrock and Jamie Blizzard; numerous great grandchildren; and a sister, Betty Manning of Cocoa, Fla.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 1 at the Music Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Jordan Cemetery in Dixie Union. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. today (Wednesday, April 30) at Music Funeral Home.
