Thomas wins gold at GRPA state

COMMERCE — Pierce County’s Recreation Department track program claimed one state title and two runnerup finishes here at the Class B/C state meet at East Jackson High School.

Dathan Thomas, a student at Pierce County Middle School, won the 14-under discus event Saturday, April 26 with a throw of 106’5” edging out Dawson County’s Samuel Loring’s throw of 104’11”. Thomas won the District II title a week earlier with a throw of 103’10”.

He finished fifth in the shot put with a heave of 35’11” after placing second at District with a toss of 37’. Appling County’s Makelanda Green captured the title with a mark of 46’3”.

Brooke Pruitt, a student at Patterson Elementary School, finished second in the 8under girls’ standing long jump with a leap of 5’7.75”. She recorded a jump of 5’8” to win the District title. Collins Coker of White County was the winner with a distance also of 5’7.75”.

Ava Slusher, who attends Midway Elementary School, finished second in the 10under softball toss with a throw of 95’9”. She recorded a mark of 98’2” to win the District title. Makayla Cates of Burke County grabbed the state title with a throw of 114’8”.
