PCHS taking 11 individuals, 7 relay teams to Sectional track meet

BEARVILLE — Pierce County High School’s Lady Bears and Bears finished third and fourth here at Pierce County Middle School in the two-day Region 3 track meet.

The Lady Bears had five individuals and three relay teams qualify for the Saturday, May 3 Class AA B Sectional at East Jackson High School in Commerce featuring Regions 2, 3 4 and 8. The Bears qualified six individuals and four relay teams.

Appling County swept the girls’ and boys’ titles during the April 22 track preliminaries and field finals, and April 24 meet (track finals). The Lady Pirates total 195 points to easily outdistance the field. They were followed by Savannah Arts Academy (120), PCHS (109), Crisp County (84), Cook (74) and Tattnall County (32).

The Pirates totaled 184 points. They were followed by Tattnall County (142), Crisp County (134), PCHS (94), Savannah Arts Academy (68) and Cook (39).

The top four finishers in each event clinched berths in each of two Sectionals. The top eight places at the Sectionals qualify for the two-day state meet set for Friday, May 9 and Saturday, May 10 at East Jackson High School.

Girls’ meet

Drew Caren, Kaitlyn Sapp and Azalea Mobley qualified in two events each. They will be joined by Layla Chandel, Zanyria Monroe, the 4x100-meter relay team, the 4x200m relay team and the 4x400m relay team.

Both Caren and Sapp won two individual events each. Caren was first in the discus (108’7”) and shot put (33’3”). Sapp captured the pole vault (7’) and high jump (4’9”).

Mobley was the runnerup in the long jump (16’2”) and third in the 100m (13.04 sec./13.33 prelim). The 4x200m relay team 1:55.52) also finished third.

Chandel (1:05.86/1:05.85 prelim) was fourth in the 400m as was Monroe (51.40 sec./50.67 prelim) in the 300m hurdles. Both the 4x100m relay team (52.27 sec.) and the 4x400m relay team (4:31.44) also placed fourth.

Finishing fifth were Sarah Minott (30’4”) in the shot put, Dominque Hightower (19.07 sec./19.70 prelim) in the 100m hurdles and Mobley (28.41 sec./28.19 prelim) in the 200m.

Placing sixth were Kora Good (15’1.5”) in the long jump, Ana Llamas-Diaz (7:25.22) in the 1,600m, Kristin Clark (1:06.37/1:06.94 prelim) in the 400m, Monroe (19.77 sec./19.11 prelims) in the 100m hurdles and Minott (72’10”) in the discus.

Hightower (1:00.41/1:04.02 prelim) posted an eighth-place finish in the 300m, Jesslyn Moore (27’7”) was ninth in the triple jump and Llamas-Diaz (3:07.24) 10th in the 800m.

Patience Smith (11’11”) placed 12th in the long jump, Kiersten Jones (21’7”) 13th in the shot put and 16th in the discus (45’4”) in the discus.

Boys’ meet

Omar Jinks and Joe Drew will lead the Bears’ squad qualifying for two individual events.

Amir McKenzie, Jordan Williams, Sam Braddock and Braden McKendree earned individual spots in one event. The 4x800m relay team, the 4x100m relay team, the 4x400m relay team and the 4x200m also earned spots.

Jinks finished second in the 100m (11.28 sec./10.84 prelim) and 200m (22.53 sec./22.02 prelim). Drew was second in the triple jump (43’4”) and fourth in the 400m (50.47 sec./51.38 prelim).

McKenzie (5’10”) was second in the high jump. Also finishing second were the 4x800m relay team (9:13.30), the 4x100m relay team (42.91 sec.) and the 4x400m relay team (3:32.95).

Williams was the lone third-place finisher with his (42’3.5”) in the shot put. Placing fourth were Braddock (20’3”) in the long jump, McKendree (45.02 sec./44.27 prelim) in the 300m hurdles and the 4x200m relay team (1:36.34).

Yontareon Moore (17.99 sec./18.39 prelim) was one spot out of qualifying finishing fifth in the 110m hurdles. Placing seventh were Trenton Kennedy (108’9”) in the discus, Joeshua McBride (53.51 sec./52.46 prelim) in the 400m and Braddock (23.58 sec./23.18 prelim) in the 200m.

Placing eighth were McBride (18’11”) in the long jump and Brandon Yepes (12:14.02) in the 3,200m. Yepes (2:19.18) was ninth in the 800m as was Hope Carson (106’10”) in the discus.

Finishing 10th were Landon Rainey (12:38.70) in the 3,200m and McKendree (17’11.5”) in the long jump. Recording 11th-place finishes were Brock Benton (5:34.85) in the 1,600m and Kennedy (36’2.5”) in the shot put.

Leland Williams (98’1”) was 12th in the discus and Micah Bryant (2:23.87) 13th in the 800m. Finishing 14th were K’Don Lashley (35’6”) in the shot put and Coleman Lee (5:56.74) in the 1,600m and William McQuaig (2:24.16) in the 800m.
