Nahunta council begins work on FY25-26 budget

NAHUNTA — City of Nahunta officials met Tuesday to begin discussions for the FY25-26 budget.

When adopted, the budget for the City of Nahunta will go into effect July 1.

The budget for the Fiscal Year beginning July 1 and ending June 30, 2025 was $2,310,758 or the biggest in city history.

A second meeting for Water & Sewer was scheduled for Tuesday night, April 29 inside City Hall.

City Clerk Angie Wirth walked Mayor Marty Lee and councilmembers Bruce Davis, Andrew Altman and Cyrstal Johns through the three-page FY24-25 budget and estimated income and expenses figures through June 30 during the April 22 meeting.

The Operating Revenue (taxes) budget totaled $1,028,010 for the current fiscal year. Projections through June 30 put the number at $1,069,052 for an increase of nearly $41,000.

Licenses and permits is projected to finish near $30,900 — nearly $6,000 more than budgeted.

Fines and Forfeitures will exceed the budgeted amount of $217,353 with the City taking in a projected total of $379,290. Wirth explained the increase was in Municipal Court Fines and the speed camera installed at Nahunta Elementary/ Primary School.

There is also a $17,000 increase which included a surplus sale and miscellaneous items.

The increase of revenue over the FY24-25 budget is projected at $228,009 reaching a projected total $1,546,720 with expenses being the same for a balanced budget.

As for operating expenses, the City is projected to stay at the budget number of $24,052 for the council. The mayor’s expense is projected to rise nearly $7,600 to $23,852. The biggest cost is Education/Training at $7,000 higher than originally budgeted.

There was a $1,400 increase with the advertising of Elections.

Administrative expenses are projected at $95,599 above budget with employee benefits rising $10,400, Purchase of Professional & Tech Services at $10,000 and a Building Inspection of $10,000. Repairs & Maintenance to City Hall are $5,000 as is Repairs & Maintenance to equipment and Professional Fees.

There is a $25,000 budget increase in expenditures for Municipal Court which is Payment to other agencies.

The Nahunta Police Department is projected to finish approximately $2,000 under budget.

The Street Department is projected to be $90,000 over budget with four line items accounting for 74 percent of the expenses. Infrastructure Repair & Maintenance is $23,500 higher, Repair & Maintenance of equipment is $18,000, employee benefits is up $15,000 and the electric bill is at $10,000.

NPD Chief Brad Todd released his department’s numbers from July 1, 2024 through April 22, 2025. Officers have made 78 arrests to date.

They have conducted 1,821 traffic stops with 728 citations issued (39.96%) and 1,093 warnings given (60.04%).
