SYLVESTER — Brantley County qualified six individuals and two relay teams at the Region 1 track meet here at Worth County High School for the Class A Division I state sectional.
The Lady Herons had four individuals finish in the top four places to qualify in the Tuesday, April 22 meet for the Friday, May 2 Sectional A meet in Cochran and hosted by Bleckley County High School. The Herons have two individuals and two relay teams.
The Sectional will consist of Regions 1, 2, 3 and four. The top eight finishes in each event then advance on to the two-day state meet in Rome scheduled for Friday, May 9 and Saturday, May 10.
Thomasville swept both the girls’ and boys’ titles. The Lady Bulldogs totaled 194 points to outdistance runner-up Jeff Davis (169) in the seven-team girls’ meet. They were followed by Worth County (118), Berrien (45), Brantley County (40), Fitzgerald (38) and Bacon County (25).
The Bulldogs totaled 183 points in clipping host Worth County’s 165.5 points in the seven-team boys’ meet. The Rams were followed by Berrien (137.5), Jeff Davis (95), Fitzgerald and Brantley County (40). Bacon County did not register a point.
Girls’ meet
Avery Crews posted the Lady Herons best finish recording a runner-up spot in the 1,600-meter with a time of 6:00.48 in the 1,600-meter.
Crews also qualified in the 800m event finishing third with a time of (2:44.92). Also posting thirdplace finishes were Mailey Thigpen (97’2”) in the discus and Mallory Crosby (50.85 seconds) in the 300m hurdles.
Klara Barnes clinched the final spot running to a fourth-place showing in the 1,600m with a time of 6:07.27) in the 1,600m.
Finishing seventh were Briar Cothern (21.29 sec.) in the 100m hurdles, Thigpen (28’2”) in the shot put, Barnes (3:00.64) in the 800m and the 4x100m relay team (58.09 sec.).
Cothern (11’4”) was eighth in the long jump. Placing ninth were Baylee Lane (75’4.5”) in the discus and Sarah Trusty (24.04 sec.) in the 100m hurdles.
Posting 12th-place finishes were Sarah Trusty (62’3.5”) in the discus and Crosby (13.63 sec.) in the 100m. Riley Powell (14.55 sec.) was 18th in the 100m.
Boys’ meet
Hayze Evans posted a first-place finish in the 800m with a time of 2:11.75 in the 800m and was second in the 1,600m 4:53.81 in the 1,600m.
He’ll be joined at the Sectional by Malachi Saunders, who placed third in the high jump clearing the bar at six feet. Both the 4x100m relay team (58.09 sec.) and the 4x400m relay team (3:48.96) recorded fourth-place showings.
Placing seventh were Nathan Howell (5’6”) in the high jump and Devein Saunders (23.51 sec.) in the 200m. Finishing eigth were Jayden Simmons (5’4”) in the high jump and Evinrude Green (14:20.81) in the
3,200m.
Logging ninth-place finishes were Devein Saunders
(40’) in the triple jump and Carter Lentz (6:25.57) in the
1,600m. Recording 10th-place finishes were Napoleon Platt (83’9.5”) in the discus and Holton Depratter
(49.28 sec.) in the 300m hurdles.
Posting 11th-place finishes were Depratter (81’7”) in the discus and Malachi Saunders in both the long jump
(18’3”) and the 100m (11.71 sec.).
Depratter (33’2”) was 12th in the shot put, Daesean Hutcheson (34’8.4”) 13th in the triple jump and Wiley Ray (1:05.12) 14th in the 400m.
Placing 16th were Cayden Hill (70’8”) in the discus, Hutcheson (17’1”) in the long jump, Travon Baker
(30’2”) in the shot put and Bryan Chevalier (3:03.63) in the 800m.
Zayne Smith (26.61 sec.) was 18th in the 200m while Jaszavin Wade (27’9.5”) was 19th in the shot put.
