For two hours Saturday, a roadside protest was held along a stretch of Memorial Avenue in front of the plaza between Checker’s and Hog ‘n’ Bones.
Organized by Satilla Democrats, approximately 6070 citizens raised signs with a variety of messages, including Veterans Against Trump, Hands Off Democracy, Black Lives Matter, Resist Tyranny and more.
Some came to protest violations of due process. Others were worried about Musk’s cuts to the Veterans Administration or threatened changes to social security.
Many U.S. flags were flown, and at least one Ukrainian flag as well. Coordinated to coincide with nationwide protests, the diverse group composed of men and women of varying ages, races and backgrounds were led in call and response chants such as, “Hands off — our social security. Hands off — our democracy.”
Protesters came from local counties including Ware, Camden, Pierce, and Brantley, and were joined by others from as far away as Tallahassee, Fla.

More than 100 people attended a “Hands Off” rally Saturday afternoon, April 19, on Memorial Drive in Waycross to protest the sweeping cuts in government programs by the Trump Administration and DOGE (Department of Government Efficiency), which is spearheaded by Elon Musk. Photo By GREG O’DRISCOLL
