JV Lady Bears fall in finale, Bears finish with two victories

BEARVILLE — Pierce County’s junior varsity basketball teams closed out their season winning two of the final three home games.

The Lady Bears dropped a 43-21 decision Saturday, February 8 to visiting Brantley County.

The Bears won their final two games beating visiting Cook 46-38 Friday, February 7. They followed with a 4539 win Saturday over Brantley County.

Brantley County outscored the Lady Bears in three of the four quarters in rolling to the victory in a foul-marred contest.

The two teams combined to shot 55 free throws. BCHS went 13-of-29 from the free throw line while Pierce County finished 7-of-26.

The Lady Herons built a 10-point lead by the end of the first period at 12-2. Each team scored 11 points during the second quarter with Brantley County taking a 2313 halftime lead.

BCHS widened the margin to 21 points by the end of the third stanza outscoring the Lady Bears 15-4 for a commanding 38-17 lead. Scoring was at a minimum in the final period with the Lady Herons hold a 5-4 scoring advantage.

Caren Drew and Azaela Mobley paced Pierce County with six points and five points respectively. Jose’ziah Monroe was next with four points.

Jesslyn Moore netted three points with Kamil Strickland chipping in two points. Shakira Smith converted a free throw.

Sarah Grace Tompkins led nine Brantley County players in the scoring column finishing with a game-high 10 points. Chloe Johns followed with nine points with Edie Lowther adding seven points.

Brodie Allen netted five points with Julia Miller finishing with four points. Mia Kate Baker contributed three points. Grace Carver and Caelin Dixon each scored two points. Natalie Hester added a free throw.

Pierce County’s eight-point victory came courtesy of an eight-point scoring margin over the middle two quarters against the Hornets.

The two teams battled to an 11-all standoff in the first period. The Bears clipped Cook 10-9 in the second stanza to take a 21-20 lead at intermission.

PCHS doubled up the Hornets 14-7 during the third quarter to open up a 35-27 advantage. Each team scored 11 points in the final period.

Jemel Strickland (two treys) claimed game-high scoring honors finishing with 15 points. Kendrick Benson (trey) added 13 points. Gihad Taylor netted seven points.

Ty Monroe and Marshon Stanford each scored four points. Armir McKenzie chipped in two points with Trey Clarke converting a free throw.

PCHS outscored the Herons by nine points over the final two periods to rally from a three-point halftime deficit for the victory.

Brantley County doubled up the Bears 12-6 in the first period. PCHS cut the deficit in half by intermission outscoring the Herons 14-11 to trail 23-20 at the break.

Pierce County opened the second half outscoring the visitors 10-4 during third quarter action to take a 30-27 lead. The Bears outpointed Brantley County 15-12 in the final stanza to hold on.

Strickland (trey) paced Pierce County with a gamehigh 15 points. Benson (trey) was next with 13 points while Taylor (trey) bagged 11 points. Clark followed with five points and McKenzie finished with a free throw.

Tristan Dyess (trey) topped Brantley County’s scoring chart leading nine players with eight points. Cole Courson and Nathan Howell followed with seven points and six points respectively.

Zary Harris and Houze Evans (trey) each scored five points. Travor Baker netted three points. Eli Thomas and Autry Johns chipped in two points each. Corbin Roberson added a free throw.
