Worth County ends BCHS win streak at seven

Brantley County’s Lady Herons won their first two Region 1 games of the week before having a seasonbest seven-game winning streak snapped.

The Lady Herons (12-5 overall, 61 region) won their sixth consecutive game Tuesday, January 14 notching a 73-21 road decision against Berrien (3-16, 1-6), which lost its 10th consecutive game. The 73 points are a season-best total. The Lady Rebels are two years removed from a 19-win season.

BCHS followed with a 53-42 decision Friday, January 17 over visiting Fitzgerald (5-8, 3-3) for a seventh straight victory. The loss was the second in three games for the Lady Purple Hurricane.

Visiting Worth County (7-7, 5-0) moved atop the region standings Saturday, January 18 with a spinetingling 51-49 decision over the Lady Herons.

Brantley County had three games slated for this week with two on the road. The Lady Herons’ game Tuesday, January 21 at Bacon County was changed to Friday, February 7. They visit struggling Pierce County Friday, January 24 in Bearville. BCHS closes out the week Saturday, January 25 hosting Thomasville.

The Lady Herons play at Jeff Davis Tuesday, January 28 and host Berrien Friday, January 31 in the next to last week of the regular season.

Lady Herons .....................73 Berrien .............................21 NASHVILLE — The Lady Herons outscored Berrien by 10 points or better in every quarter en route to the 52-point trouncing.

The Lady Herons doubled up Berrien 20-10 in the first period. Brantley County outpointed the Lady Rebels 14-2 in the second stanza to take a 34-12 halftime lead.

The domination continued over the final two quarters. BCHS increased its margin to 37 points by the end of the third period to 55-18 after outscoring the home team 216. The Lady Herons finished the “mercy rule” final period with an 183 scoring advantage.

Summer Colley (rebound, assist, steal) led a season-best 12 player in the scoring column with a gamehigh 18 points. Ayaniah Davenport (six rebounds, four steals) and Julie Carter (two rebounds, two assists, steal) bagged eight points each.

Riana Dennard (team-high five steals, team-high five assists, two rebounds) and Abbie Lee (four rebounds, four assists, three steals) followed with seve points apiece. Tamiyah Coley (rebound) and Kimora Mincey (team-leading 11 rebounds) contributed six points and five points respectively.

Brodie Allen (rebound, steal) and Edie Lowther (three rebounds) contributed four points each. Lydia Anderson netted three points, Kirsten Smith (two rebounds) chipped in two points and Ella Highsmith (four rebounds, two assists, steal) added a free throw.

Lady Herons .....................53 Fitzgerald .........................42 CANEY BAY — Brantley County outscored the Lady Purple Hurricane by 12 points in the third quarter to pull away from a halftime tie and notch the victory.

The two teams battled to a 13-all tie through one period. Each team scored 11 points in the second quarter and headed to intermission in a 24-all stalemate.

The Lady Herons took control in the third stanza outscoring Fitzgerald 19-7 to take a 43-31 lead into the final period. The visitors chipped one point off the deficit over the last eight minutes outpointing BCHS 11-10.

Carter (two rebounds, two steals, assist) led three players in double figures with 14 points. Lee (teamhigh tying three steals) recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Colley (five rebounds, two assists) netted 10 points.

Highsmith (six rebounds) bagged six points. Smith and Dennard (team-high tying three assists, team-high three steals) finished with five points and four points respectively.

Mincey (team-leading 11 rebounds, team-high tying three assists, two steals) and Davenport (four rebounds, two steals) canned a free throw apiece.

Worth Co. ...............51 Lady Herons ..........49 CANEY BAY — Visiting Worth County overcame a two-point deficit entering the final period outscoring the Lady Herons by four points to escape.

Brantley County grabbed a 17-15 lead in a fast-paced opening quarter. The Lady Rams cut the deficit in half by intermission with a 12-11 scoring advantage to trail 28-27 at the break.

The Lady Herons doubled their margin by the end of the third period clipping the visitors 10-9 for a 38-36 lead. Worth County outpointed BCHS 15-11 over the final eight minutes for the two-point victory.

Mincey (team-high tying three steals, assist) recorded a double-double for the Lady Herons’ scoring 13 points and pulling in 11 rebounds. Dennard (team-high tying three steals, assist) and Colley (three rebounds, assist) finished with nine points each.

Davenport (five rebounds, two steals) and Carter (team-leading three assists, two rebounds, steal) contributed seven points apiece. Lee (four rebounds, two assists, steal) and Highsmith (four rebounds) each added two points.
