Students from grades 35 in Nicole DeLoach and Jeanne Crawford’s classes embarked on an educational adventure that took them out of the classroom and into the real world. The young scholars visited Ace Hardware and J. Leonard’s for a day filled with practical learning and community engagement.

The field trip kicked off at Ace Hardware, where students were divided into small groups, each tasked with purchasing a specific item. Guided by their teachers, the students engaged in meaningful conversations with sales associates, discussing the cost and delivery options of their items. This hands-on experience allowed students to apply their classroom knowledge in a realworld setting, making decisions based on practical considerations.

The excursion continued at J. Leonard’s, where the students were treated to lunch. Here, members of the Blackshear Rotary Club joined the students, fostering an environment of mentorship and community support. The Rotary Club members generously provided cupcakes and cookies for dessert, adding a sweet touch to the day's activities.

This field trip was made possible thanks to a grant awarded to Jeanne Crawford by the Pierce County Foundation for Excellence in Education. The grant's purpose is to encourage students to articulate their needs and wants through conversations with adults, bridging the gap between youth and the community.

The combination of practical shopping experience and community interaction made the day not only enjoyable but also invaluable for these young learners, providing them with skills and experiences that will benefit them long into the future.
