COLUMBUS — Brantley County begins it’s quest here at the Columbus Softball Complex for an elusive state title in softball.

The Lady Herons (189), who entered the Class 3A state tournament as a 10th seed, put their fivegame winning streak on the line today (Wednesday, October 28) at 11 a.m., against second-seed Worth County (28-4), winners in nine of their last 10 games, in the double- elimination tournament.

BCHS swept neighboring Region 3 rival Pierce County, seeded seventh, Monday, October 19 in Bearville in the “Sweet 16” portion of the bracket winning 5-2 and 9-2.

The Lady Herons, the highest remaining seed in the field, are one of three Region 3 members playing in the “Elite 8” joining top-seed and unbeaten Appling County (27-0) and fifth-seed Toombs County (25-5).

Brantley County is making just its second appearance in the “Final 8” since the GHSA moved to fastpitch in 2002. The Lady Herons finished fourth in 2019.

BCHS was third in 1993 and 1994, followed by a fourth-place showing in 1995 during the slowpitch era.

Worth County and the Lady Herons shared Region 1-A the previous two seasons. Brantley County won five of the six encounters in the two three-game regular season series including the last five.

Worth County has scored 334 runs this season. The Lady Rams have allowed just 67. Eight of their hitters are batting .400 or better.

Appling County, which won state titles in 2021 and 2023, opens with ninth-seed Morgan County (21-10), winners of four straight. The Lady Bulldogs captured their fourth overall title in 2024 to go along with titles won in 2002, 2003 and 2005.

Fifth-seed Toombs County, winners of six straight, matches up with defending champion Sonoraville (26-6), also winners of six in a row.

The losers will play at Thursday, October 29 at 5 p.m. The winners meet at 12:30 p.m., Thursday.

Third-seed Rockmart (26-6), which won a AA title in 2017 and winners in eight of its last 10 games, takes on sixth-seed Pike County (24-6), winners of six straight.

The loser of the Lady Yellowjackets and Lady Pirates matchup faces the loser of the Lady Herons-Lady Rams game at 5 p.m. Thursday. The winners play at 12:30 p.m.
