(The Pierce County Board of Commissioners discussed and/or voted on the following during their regular meeting Tuesday, October 6.)
Solar energy regulations: Commissioners approved an ordinance regulating right-of-way, infrastructure and energy facilities for solar energy farms.
Zoning requests: Commissioners voted to approve a request for a variance to install a mobile home at 6603 Christie Circle. The item was tabled at the September meeting over concerns it would be too close to another mobile home already located on the property. Commissioners were satisfied there was enough room on the parcel for both homes.
Zoning amendments: Commissioners approved resolutions for an updated version of the county’s land use agreement with the cities of Offerman and Patterson. The county will handle building permits and inspections for the City of Offerman. The commission also adopted an amended resolution from the Mayor and City Council of Blackshear for Blackshear. Blackshear voted earlier this year to begin handling its own zoning and permitting.
Appointments and resignations: The board approved appointing Mark Deal to the Pierce County Planning Commission for a three year term through 2029. The board voted to accept the resignation of Rebecca Thigpen as city representative to the planning commission and Jimmy Thrift as a member of the library board.
County manager report: Interim County Manager Thomas Sauls gave an update on various county departments in his report. Sauls reviewed the seven page report pageby- page. Items of note included a report from Tax Commissioner Nicole Scurry about tax bills being mailed out. EMS Director Daniel Royal gave a comprehensive report from his department and announced a new ambulance should be delivered in the next month. In the financial report, Sauls noted that through August 31, the county had revenue of $13.1 million and expenditures of $9.6 million. Total projected revenue and expenses for 2026 is $16.5 million.
Invocation leader: The Rev. Edmund Thrift of Shady Grove Baptist Church led the invocation at the meeting.
Pledge leader: Sheriff Ramsey Bennett led the pledge of allegiance.
Next meeting: The next regular commission meeting will take place at 6 p.m. Tuesday, November 3, at the Southeast Georgia Regional Agriculture Center in Blackshear.
