Representatives of WoodmenLife Chapter 477 presented a $10,328.39 check to the Ware County Police Department during the Ware County Board of Commissioners work session Monday, October 12, continuing a series of donations funded by the sale of a former chapter hall.

Julie Peacock, speaking on behalf of the group, explained WoodmenLife — formerly known as Woodmen of the World — is a member-owned fraternal benefits life insurance company rather than a stock company. Surplus funds are returned to local communities instead of being distributed as shareholder dividends.

The local chapter had maintained a building for many years near the edge of Pierce County. After the property was sold, members decided the proceeds should support first responders in the area, consistent with the organization’s practice of community reinvestment.

Peacock said the chapter has already directed a little over $30,000 from the sale to the Ware County Sheriff’s Office and the Ware County Fire Department. Monday’s check was designated for the Ware County Police Department and will cover body armor and carrier packages, an RX Storm Fire/Storm Six thermal scope, a rifle package, and ammunition.

The check was presented to Assistant Police Chief Dave Hanson in front of the commission. Commissioners present included Chairman Elmer Thrift, Barry Cox, Leonard Burse, and Jon Tindall.

WoodmenLife Chapter 477 has made similar equipment donations in recent months, including funding for bullet-resistant vests and carriers for Blackshear police and gear for Blackshear firefighters, as well as a roughly $11,000 contribution to the Waycross Police Department. The group continues to operate an office in Waycross.
