Supporters of the Ben James Primitive Baptist Church cemetery were honored with much applause from their hosts earlier this month at the annual fish fry.

The group of four dozen not only enjoyed a great feast October 10, but were given deep appreciation for attending as their presence helps keep the historic cemetery “one of the best kept and picturesque in Pierce County,’’ according to the five dedicated cemetery trustees.

Trustee Norma Jean Tuten Napier of Jacksonville, Fla., joined her sister Gail Tuten Hargreaves of Crystal River, Fla., Eric Howard of Blackshear, along with new members Dale Bennett and his wife, Caro, of Waycross, in welcoming and showering guests with “many thanks for attending despite the stormy weather (which cleared for the exact dinner time) and for their dedicated support of the annual fish meals.’’

The fish fry was first held November 3, 1984, organized and hosted by Opal Moore Tuten and Edgar and Jean Moore. Opal and Edgar attended Ben James Church as children with their parents. Opal joined the church in 1954 and Edgar was a deacon for many years.

Napier gave special thanks for the trustee team commenting, “I’m so very proud of them which takes care of the cemetery. We discuss the meal and go with it!’’

Chef for the memorable meal was Jerry Lee. He fried the 30 pounds of fish which was served along with chicken, cheese and plain grits, slaw, baked beans and hush puppies.

Eyes were drawn to the dessert table following the meal where guests helped themselves to cakes and pies prepared by guests. Linda Bennett’s butter pecan cake was honored as the table’s best and awarded a prize.

Trustees also thanked volunteers who helped with clean up and other kitchen tasks.

“We appreciate our young people who also helped, including Nathan Bennett, Dalton Lee and Corbin Griffin,” Napier said.

The trustees said they always enjoy the fellowship the event brings and the opportunity for all to visit the cemetery and church.
